Annie Glidden North Improvements
Here is what the committee has come up with. Some good ideas that I would like to see implemented. Not sure if this is a Frazier pipe dream or the real thing, but at least it is showing that people do care.

It's damn near criminal negligence that NIU doesn't own the square space between Crane Drive, Annie Glidden, Lucinda and Russell.

That would be a prime place for NIU development. Imagine if they would have owned that back in the 1960s and could have even put a dorm there with other educational buildings.

like it. overall some good stuff in this report that hits on a lot of obvious items and ways to improve them, namely: University Plaza, University Villages and the strip mall on Hillcrest and Blackhawk take up huge swaths of underutilized land that could be better dedicated if done correctly.

would love to see even 10% of this plan enacted.

Its good to see they are trying to address the issues. I also love the concept of unversity owned mixed use property like marquette, ND, Purdue do.

DIVERSITY
A major asset of the Annie Glidden North is the variety of residents with different
backgrounds living within such a small area. This diversity is appreciated by many and
should be maintained and harnessed to improve neighborhood conditions.

Give me a break. Is this code words that gangs are welcome?

Page 39 finally addresses crime. It should of been on the cover.

Agreed. Being real, no one wants their kid to be living their college years next to a bunch of low income housing and a sketchy 7-11. If that area was nice restaurants, stores, upscale rental units...our enrollment would be where we need it. i.e. ISU 03-banghead

Oh no, not upscale rental units. The troglodyte locals have already whined about Cornerstone and the other project near there (Pappas conspiracy theory). They are also shocked and angry that another decent hotel is going to be built along Annie Glidden.

I told my daughter when she gets rob on Greenbrier to say this when she has a gun to her head. "Please do not shoot: I AM A MEMBER OF THE COMMUNITY GARDENS ON VACANT A16 PARCELS AT GREENBRIER AND RUSSELL ROADS."

Geez things get run through with a fine tooth comb. Moral of the story is of the area was nice...we would have more students.

A Home2Suites extended-stay hotel, but good enough for NIU football fans and events at the Convo Center and the Egyptian

The area was nice originally when students occupied the properties. Then landlords overbuilt the apartment complexes in the area which was fine until enrollment tanked. After that the landlords began renting to anyone they could find without regard to background checks. Went from being student oriented neighborhood to low income neighborhood. Along with it came the rise in crime. Increase in NIU enrollment would go a long way to improving the situation.

That’s exactly my assessment of how it got to where it’s at. Now going forward, there are only two options to correct it:
1. Knock stuff down and replace with new non apartment buildings. Probably won’t happen because tough kicking people out of residences. Though UIC did exactly that

2. Grow your way out of it. More students=more need for housing. Probably won’t happen because that’s putting the cart before the horse

It’s a dilemma...unfortunately. And tough to revert back

A major asset? Yeah, the Annie Glidden North area would be in even more dire straits were it not for illustrious diversity propping it up. LOL. I'm sure its not appreciated by students who fear going out at night for getting robbed, or catching a stray bullet.
