It took Dean Smith 20 years to win a championship. What a loser.

I didn't want to get into this thread but this argument is not exactly comparing apples and oranges. Smith's first 20 years included:
1966-67 Final Four
1967-68 NCAA Championship Runner-Up
1968-69 Final Four
1971-72 Final Four
1976-77 Runner Up
1980-81 Runner Up

He also won 10 ACC conference championships in those 20 years.

As to Mick- whether he remains the head coach at Cincinnati for the rest of his coaching career is up to the big donor class. If they are satisfied with where we have been and were we are headed he will continue to be the guy here. If they are not, he will be asked to leave. Simple as that.

Unless something extraordinarily weird happens, Mick is coaching this season at minimum. No sense arguing for a different coach. Let's beat Ohio State in one month and go from there.

Something I don't understand...

For the folks (like me) who are unsatisfied with our current results in the NCAAT and against Xavier, I understand that venting can help manage our frustration.

But for the folks that are happy with where we are, why do you get so riled up and start firing off personal and vicious attacks whenever Mick is criticized? Do you think that criticisms on an internet message board will drive Mick away? Do you feel like you owe Mick something?

Mick may not be appreciated by everyone, but he is deeply appreciated where it matters most: his paycheck. He has 2.2 million reasons to stay at Cincinnati every year, and even after maintaining our current level of success for nearly a decade, the blue bloods have not come calling. Unless Mick actually brings us back to being a perennial top 10 program, with regular Sweet Sixteen trips and Xavier wins, there is no threat of losing him whatsoever.

I guess my point is this: there are plenty of great Bearcat fans that have legitimate reasons for being happy with our results, and there are plenty of great Bearcat fans with legitimate reasons for being frustrated. Let's be civil with our disagreements... Mick is a highly compensated public figure, and as such, is open for praise as well as scrutiny.

Agreed. I think Mick will break through the wall at some point and any other coach we hired, if they did break through the wall, would be at a Big 10 team the next year.

For me it is a question of: would I rather have another 2 decades of good Mick teams that have a chance of making Final 4's every year or would I rather have a coach come in for 4 years, possibly do a great job and make one final four and the bolt for greener pastures like every good football coach we've ever had.

This has always been a position that people pull out of thin air. What evidence do we have that a successful coach is going to get up and leave? We had to force our last Hall of Famer out.

We shouldn't hang on to Mick because people are scared someone will be more successful and leave. Plenty of reasons to stay at an historically great college basketball program after great success.

Also my point isn't to say we should force Mick out either. I'm happy with Mick for now. I just think we need to see more seasons like last year. If we do the deep runs will come.

Are we ignoring our last 3 successful football coaches? Did we get a new money tree out of nowhere? Our history is OLD. Seriously, our last Elite 8 was before the kids we are recruiting today were born and our last national championship is before their parents were born. I wouldn't rely on that success to lead us to the promise land moving forward and I don't expect some young hot shot coach to stay at Cincy if a marginally bigger job with an extra million a year comes calling based on championships won in the 60s.

I think the list of people who do this on both sides could be counted on one hand. Most are capable of seeing both sides and having a rational discussion.

Could you imagine if we all actually followed through with a legit bearcat banter meet-up? The millennial in me would never allow for such a thing to occur but that sure would be an interesting experiment. Props to BC Mark for actually having the balls to put his face on his posts.

I feel like people crying over the New Mexico game are hysterical. I think people who think you can just throw millions of dollars and expect instant results in the tournament are idiots and the fact we're still going on after 6 months is obnoxious. We lost, GTFO it.
Take a walk, cry, do whatever you need to and then get back to your life. There's a line between criticism and hysteria. This isn't rational complaining, no one here has stated a single solitary thing Mick did to throw the game, it's all vacuous non-sense about "He's a reflection of the program, whatever happens...he's the coach" and my personal favorite "b-b-but Xavier!"
Look if you want to offer a rational, intelligible criticism, fine. Nothing I've seen here is.
Saying "The rest of the season doesn't matter!" because we blew a game is not an reasonable argument. It's pedantic, it's stupid and it's worthy of derision. He's 61-11 the last two seasons. To suggest firing someone in that scenario is insane. No coach in their right mind is going to come here if your standards are that high and if you think you can just pluck any random coach and *poof* all our woes are gone, because you threw millions at them; you need to qualify that with something.

I've seen no arguments here, just "Waaah! Mick Cronin ate my baby!!!"

As for the civility thing, the gloves have stayed on. I'm not being hateful, just honest.

Somehow it still feels like them. *Shrug*
Might be the music, might be the thick plastic frame glasses they wear... I don't know.

Cronin is working for his alma mater, he's in his home town, his Dad lives here and he has a young child implanted in the area.

Don't think for a minute that the "blue bloods" looking for coaches not only ask themselves "do we want this guy", but also "is this a guy that will easily leave where he's at?"

Yeah, a raise will get anyone's attention, but I think the connection to Cincy... which to my knowledge he's never denied... is enough to have them move on to the next, more gettable guy.

I want a clean program that wins at a high level. To me, a “high level” is more than one S16 every 12 years. It doesn’t mean national title, but it’s got to be better than a single S16.

I was going to start a thread on Scott Googins, but thought this would be a good place for it. He had a good year last year, and I expect even better things from the baseball team next spring. In light of his relative early success, do we think he'll still be coaching by next spring?

Baseball doesn't seem to have the constant turnover of coaches, and frankly the AAC is probably one of the five best conferences in CBB (its stronger than the B1G by just about every metric and that is not hyperbole).
