We're not alone...
I believe there was an older thread with a similar subject, but I didn't feel like looking for it...

This is a little surprising. Even the might SEC has problems when they play teams the fans don't care to see. This is just another reason they'll eventually refuse to play the so called "G5". So - it's not just us.

RE: We're not alone...
"Look, our players work too hard and they deserve to have everything and people supporting them in every way and have tremendous spirit for what they've done. But there's a part of it where other people need to support them too, and there's got to be a spirit that makes it special to play here, because that's what makes it special to be here. And if that's not here, then does it continue to be special to be here or not?"

Yeah, they drew 101,471 for a game that kicked off at 11am versus an opponent they were 48 point favorites against. “Just like us”

Were you purposefully leaving out the rest of that quote?

Definitely not 101k people. Same problem whether it's 100k or 30k, schools are struggling to fill stadiums consistently.

"..the wealth of empty seats in the usually-full student section behind the south goal post was blatantly noticeable and something many fans and even a few players commented on after the game."

Thanks E04 for clarifying the point. My reason for posting the article had nothing to do with trying to say they were "just like us". My purpose of posting the article was simply to make a point that fans will not make the same effort to come to games if they do not have an interest in the opponent. Southern Miss has basically lost ALL our traditional opponents in recent years, so it really is no surprise to be struggling with attendance. And this article shows that "We're not alone". And as you point out - 101k was what was reported - not actual, and it's a point of filling the stadium you do have, regardless of size.

I'm not saying the student section was completely full at the beginning of the game, but look at the score in that picture. It's 42-0 midway thru the 2nd quarter (probably around noon). I imagine that several thousand in the student section had already headed back out to their tailgates. Regardless of the opponent, it's hard to stick around to watch a blow out, especially for Bama fans who watch about 10 of them a year. Tua hasn't even attempted a 4th quarter pass. Staying for the 2nd half just to watch 3rd teamers run out the clock isn't something most people are interested in.

It was pretty much like that from the get go. I watched the beginning of that game and was really surprised by so many empty seats at Sabanville.

I think it's amazing how so may of our "fans" always offer excuses for everyone else, but never USM.
