RE: Historical Fiction
I've never read any historical fiction really. Half of today's textbooks could be considered to be though.

RE: Historical Fiction
A lot of news could be considered historical fiction as well. You can probably add almost every political speech to the list too.

RE: Historical Fiction
turns out, reviving this thread was totally worth it. has anyone read tree of smoke by denis johnson? it bout nam. i think it involved a lot more acid than i thought it did. that war f*cked people up. coming home staring at insane asylums because you didn't want to come home in the first place. you wanted to stay in nam till you died. i don't know how the book was researched, but it seemed like he profiled voluntary lifers

denis johnson also wrote from the perspective of a few vietnamese folk and shared their stories, some unrelated to the war but relevant for being vietnamese. also a female canadian ngo/ jesus freak. lifer

if anyone's read it i've got some questions. mostly about the acid

Just finished Cornwell's latest: "Fools and Mortals".

It spins a tale around a lesser-known brother of William Shakespeare in order to give a fictional tour of Elizabethan London, just as the Puritans were starting to get a little rowdy. It also gives an interesting spin on the near simultaneous authorship of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and "Romeo and Juliet", both wedding plays -- one as comedy and the other as tragedy.

It's a little light on the rape and pillage, at which Cornwell is masterful. But it is well-worth a read.
