Do you approve of that?

What do you think the political fallout would be if District 7 were the one to get chopped up?

That's experience with Alabama politicos avoiding confrontation with reality or real decision making speaking. In 1950 the state legislature was unable to bring itself to redistrict the state from 9 to 8 districts so they had the 9 run at large with the top 8 elected. Frank Boykin of Mobile was the one left out. Perhaps it was just coincidence that Brookley AFB in Mobile was closed shortly after that election. The same kind of political leadership denied Medicaid expansion even though it cost the state millions in federal dollars and helped result in the closing of over a dozen rural hospitals.

The question is "Which Republican will agree to sacrifice themselves for the good of their party?"

That was the 1962 elections when Boykin (not really a bad person, compared to the others, but still one of the most notorious drunks/womanizers on Capitol Hill) was defeated, coming in 9th place. And then, since none of the 8 winners really wanted Mobile in their district, they all did the at-large routine again in 1964, only this time Jack Edwards of Mobile was in the top 8. So in 1965, it was actually a fairly simple matter to arrange 8 districts for the 8 incumbents.

Medicaid expansion is not about receiving money, it’s about spending money and going deeper into debt. With that said, some things are worth going into debt for and that may be one of them. But that issue has been sold simply as “Do you want to get some extra money from Big Daddy in D.C., or not?” which is an absolute lie.

None, willingly.

It was a bargain with the devil the first time, when the black caucus joined the Republicans to guarantee a black seat - which then went to Earl Hilliard, who might be the stupidest person ever to hold elective office in Alabama.

About 27 percent of Alabama voters are black (overall population share is slightly larger, because white folks are just plain old). The GOP could split them evenly and risk sending six Doug Joneses to Congress, which they won't do, or split them along logical geographic/population lines, which would send two or three Democrats to Congress. They won't do that either. Keeping one "black" district is best for the GOP, so that's what they'll do - that, and as &$%#NBLAZER says, Alabama politicians just don't do the whole confronting-reality thing.

They can't avoid it, though, and it's going to be an ugly fight. The Trustees want to opt out of that fight; I'd like to see them share a full helping of the ugliness.

Does going to at-large voting nullify the Trustees' legitimacy? I'm sure no one questioned it in 1962, but there was no #FreeUAB then to litigate it. If there's a scintilla of possibility that the Trustees are illegitimate if there are no Congressional districts, then we're going to jump on that like a bammer on a 12-pack of Miller Lite.

I’d be curious to see a map that achieves that result. Very skeptical that it could be done, unless you’re going to have Huntsville-to-Dothan districts and weird sh!t like that.

But even if it (the map) were possible, the Doug Jones x6 scenario would require the GOP to nominate Roy Moore x6. Again: very skeptical that could happen.

Democrats, perhaps. But not black Democrats, I’d wager. Certainly Terri Sewell wouldn’t be one of them.

I can envision a map that results in 4R, 2D — JeffCo as (essentially) one district — possibly grabbing a few choice neighborhoods in Tuscaloosa. and the other one starting in Mobile/Pritchard and finishing in Montgomery/Tuskegee. You’d have to draw the lines very carefully, but it’s doable.

A 3:3 map is something that I can’t quite fathom.

But anyway — quite aside from what the dreaded Republicans want or don’t want — if they dismantle CD07 there will be a huge political headache. They don’t want to deal with that, and they are going to leave it alone unless Terri Sewell herself personally steps forward and says she’s okay reducing her AA % to 50-55 or something like that.

There's a whole separate board to discuss D's and R's. What matters here are Trustees. The state constitution ties Trustee seats to Congressional districts. The Trustees are trying to amend the state constitution to overturn that provision (along with the age ceiling). With the Sewell district (whatever it's numbered) likely off the table, that almost certainly puts some of our enemies in the same district and therefore someone gets relegated. We want to see that happen.

The green vote on this proposed amendment is HELL NO.

May you prevail as you prevailed in restoring the football program.

Any chance that people from all the other non-UAT schools will join you?

It's against UAT's interest too: these buffoons have mis-managed Tuscaloosa into a cool billion dollars of debt and turned the place into the University of Texas' safety school. No one in this state (outside of the Trustees' dog-track/coal-mining power base) benefits from locking them into power.

At just under 400,000 words, the Alabama Constitution is the longest in the US and possibly the world (the longest of a sovereign state, India's rolls in at 140,000; the second-longest state constitution is Texas' at 86,000). War and Peace has 650,000, for comparison. So there are a lot of voters who reflexively vote "no" on anything. Colbert County wants a new toilet in the courthouse? NO!

With state offices all up for vote this year plus Congress (but no Senate seat) there won't be a lot of attention on the amendments, yea or nay.
