Board of Trustees Ballot Initiative
What is the Blazertalk consensus on the ballot initiative on election day? It reads as follows:

PROPOSED STATEWIDE
AMENDMENT NUMBER THREE (3)
Proposing an amendment to the
Constitution of Alabama of 1901,
relating to the Board of Trustees
of the University of Alabama, to
specify that the congressional
districts from which members are
appointed continue to reflect
those as constituted on January 1,
2018, to remove the State
Superintendent of Education from
membership, and to delete the
requirement that members vacate
office at the annual meeting of
the board following their
seventieth birthday. (Proposed by
Act 2018-132)
YES - STATEWIDE AMENDMENT NO. 3
NO - STATEWIDE AMENDMENT NO. 3

Vote no. They're trying to remove the mandatory retirement age of 70 which will keep long-time trustees unfriendly to UAB (like Espy and St John) on the board longer.

RE: Board of Trustees Ballot Initiative
I don't live in Alabama anymore, but I would be against this measure, primarily because it'd allow Paul Bryant Jr to rejoin the board and would mean that Finis St. John the 15th can stay on until the day he dies. I have no opinion on the bit about the superintendent of education, since the Alabama Board of Education doesn't regulate or oversee universities and the Governor and Superintendent generally don't attend meetings or vote. The bit about the Congressional districts is a little weird, but Tuscaloosa and Birmingham are likely to remain in the same district so regardless of redistricting taking away a seat in Alabama, which is likely, I don't see it affecting UAB representation on the board.

RE: Board of Trustees Ballot Initiative
At present, the U.S.Congressional districts may change if (as presently projected) the state loses one U.S. House seat (7 now down to 6) as a result of the 2020 census. Of course, the UA BOT can disregard this change and continue as if it didn't happen by the stipulation of 01/01/18.

No.

As said, this keeps our enemies on the Board and could re-ontroduce the worst of them.

Congressional redistricting is going to be nasty, going from six to five (white seats; they'll keep black voters packed into one district). The Trustees are trying to insulate themselves from that red-on-red fight (and this way they don't have to reduce the Board's size and introduce a crimson-on-crimson fight into the mix). I think they could benefit from a nice round of fratricide.

The State Superintendant hasn't been a factor in possibly ever, but is the one seat the cabal doesn't control.

RE: Board of Trustees Ballot Initiative
From the perspective of system, the age restriction was abolished by the earlier amendment to abolish the age ceiling for state positions and this is just good housekeeping.

I think there must be a decent argument that isn't true otherwise they would not bother.

I do not know why they would or would not want to remove the superintendent from the board.

The districting change is intended to make sure that they do not have to drop any current members off of the board. In addition to losing a district, redistricting could make it necessary to drop some current members because of where they live. They do not want to lose any of their current members through that process. The whole thing seems protectionist to me. If they don't want to drop anyone, then change the number of seats per district to 3 (and add some UAB and UAH reps).

RE: Board of Trustees Ballot Initiative
It’s time for more diversity on the Board of Trustees.
Let’s give some women and minorities a bigger more reflective role.
Women and minorities represent the vast majority of students.
Make the Board more reflective of actual enrollment.
Enough of the old white guys.

If the UA BOT is to be "more reflective of actual enrollment" then 60% or more BOT members would have to be from out of state -- maybe even from out of country.

Notnow, I truly hope that you have tongue firmly in cheek. That's just not going to happen anytime soon. No way, no how.

Anything's better than, "Thar's a nice lady works down at muh bank."

Bryant pawns in different shapes, colors and alum status (Barbara Humphrey) are worse than no diversity at all.

Diversity would be a step forward - but only matters if we also get rid of the self-perpetuation.

I have only voted for two amendments. Budget isolation, requiring legislature to address budgets first (they get around this every session) and to get rid of miscegenation language in he constitution (passed closer than you would hope). So yeah I am a firm NO.
