Ohio @ KSU - 10/6 Homecoming Game!
Kickoff @ 3:30 p.m.
Audio on 640 WHLO & Golden Flashes Radio on iHeartRadio
Video on ESPN+

First and foremost, I hope to see a great turnout from alumni this weekend. The weather is supposed to be summer-like in the low 80s with a chance of showers in the late afternoon.

The Good
Offense - Woody B continues to improve along with our receivers. We currently are a top-30 passing team. Who would've thought that after ranking near the bottom in FBS just a year ago?
Special Teams - True freshman K Matthew Trickett has been special teams MVP this season. He's stabilized our punting game after Derek Adams' injury, and is 5/6 on FGs. He's also made a couple of TD-saving tackles on kick returns.

The Bad
2nd Half Woes - Granted, against Ball State, we traded a bad 3rd quarter for a an awful 1st quarter. But in general, we've struggled in the 2nd half all season, particularly the 4th quarter where we've been outscored 45-7.
Passing Defense - we're near the bottom of the FBS right now. Our DBs get beat too often on deep routes.

The Ugly
Penalties - Obviously. We average 90+ yards in penalties per game. When we have to overachieve to win games as we rebuild, it's going to be tough to hang with anyone when we're giving them free yardage or taking away our own.

Outlook for Saturday
We have to keep QB Nathan Rourke from running and make OU beat us through the air. We were successful against a similar QB in Howard's Caylin Newton. Good news is OU has a porous defense too, giving up over 500 yards/game. This is going to be an old-fashioned "MACtion" shootout with 1000+ yards of combined offense. I'll take the Flashes 45-42.

Off the back foot, into double coverage, INT. You gotta be kidding. We haven't figured out how to win.

Only need two points, have an excellent kicker, so we throw long into double coverage. I am zipping my lips at this point.

This one hurt to attend there were a lot of OU fans in the stands and hearing the place explode on their final score sucked the air out of the stadium.

RE: Ohio @ KSU - 10/6 Homecoming Game!
Still think the team finishes 4-8 and maybe 5-7.

Remember Hazell won only 1 once in first 7 games in 2011 before they flipped the switch.

They were so close to breaking that failure mindset. It's like a fear of success.

I.E. ooooh we are getting so close to the redzone, lets settle for a fieldgoal.

It really is a mental thing not just for the players and coaches but fans.

How many times did I have to catch a thought of something like, "this is the way it's always been" to replacing that with a positive thought. I can only imagine the players lol

Team is still on the right track, despite the record.

RE: Ohio @ KSU - 10/6 Homecoming Game!
I also think we're "on the right track." But I don't see any switch flipping or many wins. We'll be lucky to win 1 game the rest of the year.

Observations from yesterday (all too familiar no matter who the coach has been):

1) Absolutely classic Gamble 15 yard penalty on the final O.U. touchdown drive. He deserves 5 stars for that hit out of bounds. A true Kent State hi-lite play. And just in case anyone thinks I'm picking on him - I think he's a good player and one of our defensive foundation players for the next couple years.

2) Just a general philosophy of mine, but I would rarely (very rarely) use a time out early in either half to avoid a 5 yard delay of game penalty. Those time outs are almost always needed at the end of the half. Accept the 5 yard penalty and move on. Just one more time out late in the game would have been quite valuable.

3) We should have used our remaining 2 timeouts during the final plays of Ohio's last scoring drive. We allowed them to score AND use all the time. You can always stop the clock on offense with incompletions, first downs, penalties, and running out of bounds (4 options that I can think of). The general thinking that you need to save a time out to get the field goal unit on the field is flawed.

4) Having said the above (#3) we should have used our remaining time out on the last penalty call (our illegal procedure). At that point the 10 seconds was more valuable than the timeout. With less than 40 seconds left (still plenty of time for 4 or 5 more plays) we panic and throw a Mel Hall (famous right fielder for the Tribe decades ago with a GREAT arm) lollipop in the hope that someone on our team will catch it or they will commit another penalty. Ummmmm. I think it was an interception.

5) So, having said the things above, if we had used our timeouts wisely, we would have had the ball on the 25 with over 3 minutes left in the game instead of 1:48. Plenty of time to go 40 yards for a reasonable field goal attempt with no panic about the time. We could have used the entire field and if we had run the Rankin running play (really caught them off guard there), it would not have been the disaster it turned out to be. And oh - by the way - we ended the game with 1 time out left. Totally wasted. Nice job.

6) O. U. scores touchdowns when they need touchdowns. We score field goals (and have a GREAT field goal kicker) when we need touchdowns. Hence another loss.

What’s interesting is THAT OU team is supposedly the best team in the league - it was a widely popular choice to win the East and Championship game. Just shows this rebuild/fix should not take long.

Also, each year I am asked by Kent state people to donate money for one cause or another. I think maybe instead I’ll donate them some cleaning supplies. I can’t believe how dirty and disgusting the bleachers were Saturday. For homecoming. Do we not care at all? Why should I donate money for new stuff if we don’t take care of what we have? My wife refuses to come back to a game with mud and black grime in the seats and weeds growing in the cracks of the concrete.

Kent State football is in need of a massive change in thinking - on and off the field. I think we have the right people in place to change it on the field, but what about off it?

I see there's no thread for the Miami game... that's appropriate. It doesn't deserve a thread. This game is completely unwatchable. I really hope we have some O lineman coming in that can start right away.

Agree. They have 3 coming in. Wouldn't mind seeing a JUCO or grad transfer.

At least Martin left Hazell players. Lewis is starting from scratch.
