Athletic programs of LIU’s two campuses merging, football going D1 in 2019
Big news on Long Island as Long Island University’s C.W. Post campus and Brooklyn campus merge their athletic programs, and it becomes one. LIU will add FCS football in 2019.

They are also changing their colors to blue and gold as well as picking a new mascot.

I wonder if Hofstra will consider adding football back. To have 3 FCS programs on Long Island would be huge. Congrats to LIU!

I’m legitimately disappointed I didn’t hear this first from DavidSt. He seems to have this kind of news on lockdown. No hard feelings, sctvman.

When my undergrad institution merged and became Case Western Reserve University, they made the mistake of completely abandoning decades of tradition. It had been the Case Rough Riders (color= Seal Brown) and the Western Reserve Redcats (color = Scarlet Red & White). The combined university made the new nickname the Spartans (yawn!). They even carbon-copied Michigan State's logo (but made it a neutral color - blue).

Awful. The result was predictable - a complete loss of alumni support, particularly from WRU alums. Shoulda been the Rough Cats, with colors of Seal Brown and Scarlet Red.

Hopefully LIU avoids that mistake. Their old mascots/colors:

LIU Post Pioneers, green and gold

LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds, silver and black

Maybe make the new nickname the Pioneer Birds? Colors are silver and gold?

It would not be politically correct but you could call them Black Pioneers, colors black and silver.

I called it. I said that the 2 schools should merge and the Post football to FCS. NEC gain 2 football teams in a short matter of time.

Reminds me of the veteran CNN analyst who predicted 37 of the last 3 recessions.

I was waiting for this post. I also called it because I said every D2 school would move to the NEC.

I’m not surprised. Do you have a link to that post when you called it? I’d love to see how far back you did.

When UTPA and UT-Brownsville merged into UTRGV, they combined the colors of both schools together. I hope the students can vote on a name. I would hate to see Blackbirds moniker go away after being around for decades.

I'll note that saying they should is not the same as predicting they would.

Quick search online pointed me to this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Company_of_Pioneers

Like an 18th Century equivalent to the Seabees. They were British loyalists of African heritage. Included a lot of runaway slaves. Unit was even based in NY.

JMO, that would be a pretty cool mascot.

Of course, that is why nobody takes him seriously. He always says “should/could”. Never does he say “will/for sure”

Change the colors to blue and gold but keep the Blackbirds nickname.

Mind BLOWN.

This is a genius idea. What other examples are there. UTRGV. Anything else? I honestly might support a similar situation for the UMass system.

Could there be anything more fraught with danger on a college campus than deciding on a new mascot, colors and nickname.

Here's my idea, just to be safe:

There was a push to merge Texas A&M's Corpus Christi and Kingsville campuses in 2016 but it didn't happen.
