RE: Athletic programs of LIU’s two campuses merging, football going D1 in 2019
Correct me if I'm wrong:
The pros of this would be: elimination of redundant facilities, concentration of expenses, larger pool of student subsidies, focus on building one brand.
The cons would be: difficult for students to attend games at either campus?

Literally half of the schools in Georgia.
Could you give a few examples?

The downside is that having multiple campuses results in extra levels of administration. It can become a bureaucratic nightmare. Sure, there CAN be efficiency gains, but after a certain size there are no efficiencies to be gained by combining services.
Case in point: the University of California system and the California State system. The sheer amount of paperwork shuffling between Sacramento and each campus is an astounding waste of time and energy.

When my undergrad institution merged and became Case Western Reserve University, they made the mistake of completely abandoning decades of tradition. It had been the Case Rough Riders (color= Seal Brown) and the Western Reserve Redcats (color = Scarlet Red & White). The combined university made the new nickname the Spartans (yawn!). They even carbon-copied Michigan State's logo (but made it a neutral color - blue).
Awful. The result was predictable - a complete loss of alumni support, particularly from WRU alums. Shoulda been the Rough Cats, with colors of Seal Brown and Scarlet Red.
Hopefully LIU avoids that mistake. Their old mascots/colors:
LIU Post Pioneers, green and gold
LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds, silver and black
Maybe make the new nickname the Pioneer Birds? Colors are silver and gold?
It would not be politically correct but you could call them Black Pioneers, colors black and silver.

Quick search online pointed me to this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Company_of_Pioneers
Like an 18th Century equivalent to the Seabees. They were British loyalists of African heritage. Included a lot of runaway slaves. Unit was even based in NY.
JMO, that would be a pretty cool mascot.
No. The Black Company of Pioneers were Loyalists during the Revolution.
We don't honor Confederate soldiers. We shouldn't honor Loyalists either.

How about the Islanders?
I would also put a unique combo colors of the 2 schools. Green and Silver or Green and Black. Don't see those color combo's very much.

The UC system office is in Oakland and the CSU system office is in Long Beach. Not much shuffling coming out of here.

Any word on the logistics of the athletic merger? Will football stay at Post with most other sports playing a majority of their games in Brooklyn?
If this goes successful A&M Corpus Christi and A&M Kingsville should use it as a blueprint, merging to form A&M Gulf Coast.

The Northeast Conference could part with associate members Hobart and Saint Joseph’s for men’s lacrosse. Fellow A-10 schools UMass, Richmond, and Saint Boanventure also sponsor the sport. The A-10 could then pick up Bellarmine or Air Force for its sixth lacrosse member, and then all of the SoCon, NEC, and A-10 would have six members in lacrosse.

Most of the mergers in Georgia involved one school being consolidated into a larger institution. When Armstrong State was folded into Georgia Southern many students at Armstrong were not happy about it. They lost their D2 athletics just to become a branch campus.

I’m surprised Hofstra didn’t look into the Pioneer League before. It’s non-scholarship.

When you call every D2 moving up some do hit. A broken class Cj is correct twice a day.

Ahh, now I understand why the rivalry exists between UCal system & the Cal State system.

Hofstra was trying to get an A-10 invite. At the time they pulled this move, there was speculation that the A-10 wanted to replace Fordham with another New York area school. It disbanded football in an attempt to redirect re$ource$ and show the A-10 that it was all in for basketball.

Teams that will compete in Brooklyn are: Basketball (Men’s and Women’s), Bowling (Women’s), Fencing (Women’s), Ice Hockey (Women’s), Softball, Swimming (Women’s), Track & Field (Men’s and Women’s), Volleyball (Women’s), and Water Polo (Women’s).
Teams that will compete at Post are: Baseball, Cross Country (Men’s and Women’s), Equestrian, Field Hockey, Football, Golf (Men’s and Women’s), Lacrosse (Men’s and Women’s), Rowing (Women’s), Rugby (Women’s), Soccer (Men’s and Women’s), Tennis (Women’s), and Wrestling.
Looks like most of the indoor sports will be located in Brooklyn and most of the outdoor sports will be at Post.

Maybe they should be known as the Hornets as an homage to the legendary Clair Bee.
