Anyone who has a subscription to The Athletic should check this article out, it's a good read.

https://theathletic.com/560345/2018/10/0...oint-game/

Quote:On Nov. 23, 1968, Houston and Tulsa met in the Astrodome late in the regular season. Houston expected to win, but no one thought it would happen the way it did.
Quote:“We had a really great offense; a top-10 defense, too,” then-Houston linebacker and current Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Wade Phillips told The Athletic. “We had a really good team.”

What seemed like a routine game got out of hand by the end. The final score is hard to believe to this day:

For those who dont have a subscription to the Athletic, here is a recent piece done on a new free Houston fan site taking a look back at the some of the records set in the game and quotes from some who participated. The Letterman clip with ex-Tulsa player Dr Phil is pretty funny. FWIW--While I am not a subscriber, I have heard very good things about "The Athletic" web site. I follow several of the writers for the Athletic on twitter. I may have to break down and sign up for a subscription as many of the stories they tease on twitter seem to peek my interest (like the OP)....but I cant read them.

Hofstra beat Temple 900-0 in their street clothes once so really anything's possible.

Three crazy facts.

1. The score was only 24-6 in the 3rd quarter.
2. Houston scored 49 points in the 4th quarter.
3. Houston returned a punt for a touchdown with 30 seconds left for the final score.

I'm right there with ya.

And the deal they are running on Twitter and Facebook makes it almost silly to NOT subscribe. It comes out to something like $2.50 a month, paid annually at $30. Heck, the monthly subscription rate of $9.99 isn't bad either. They're picking up writers like a lint brush collects lint too. I think I'll prolly give it a shot and see how it goes for a year.

Here is a fourth

The year before is the game that probably made it Teh Rivalry (Houston has played Tulsa the most in football and is the third most played opponent for Tulsa in football). Tulsa upset Houston, knocking them out of the top 10 and a bowl game when bowl games were rare.

Next year Tulsa players came up with a mysterious illness the night/early morning before the game and Houston managed to get a 100 points. Montezuma's revenge or Yeoman's? You make the call.
