MyBB Interview with Coach Pera
My name is Eric Barber and I am a sophomore at Rice.

I launched an independent podcast about Rice Athletics where I interview Rice players and coaches about who they are and they're journey to Rice. It's called South Main Sports. This podcast will hopefully come out weekly and feature a variety of different athletes and coaches from different sports. Later in the year, I will start producing videos.

For the first episode, my guest is men’s basketball head coach Scott Pera. We talk about his coaching career in both high school and college basketball (including coaching NBA MVP James Harden), how he got to Rice, and his vision for the future of the program.

You can listen to it two ways.

On iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/sout...0420886097

On Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/show/5eKAZhy9RbYeQc7DEeotAG?si=Wuz8AjdpQg-KEu-DzxiKZA

If you'd like to get in touch with me on social media you can follow the account on twitter and instagram and like on facebook @southmainsport.

I'd love to hear your feedback.

Scott has said that we're not recruiting against schools around here, but against Ivy League schools. He thinks kids that are especially academically oriented will be more likely to stick around.

Yeah, I used to think that the solution to the transfer issue was recruiting more in Texas but if you look at our recent history, the guys who have had the closest ties to Rice/Houston (Trauber, Youngkin, Quez, Connor, etc) have all left with the exception of Trauber...

On the other hand, guys like Ako Adams, Rob Martin, etc have all stuck around despite being from far away.

Great interview... I'm not sure where else we'd have gotten that particular perspective from coach Pera. That was a very interesting show, and sets a high bar for the future.

The audio quality was very good as well.

Well done.

Youngkin left? Did he leave school or just the team? His dad paid for the Youngkin center for the players and was a bench player for the Owls. When/why did he leave? Strange.

Yep. He transferred to SMU, his mother's alma mater. (Bob Reinhold posted the news here in May.)

He's studying Corporate Communications & Public Affairs (CCPA) there. Rice has no major in this area, although there we have many alums who have had very successful careers in these fields. I see that SMU's CCPA faculty and facilities have recently been renovationed, and "naming opportunities" are still available. Might another Youngkin Center be in the offing ... in addition to the Youngkin Administrative Suite at the Mustangs' Miller Event Center?

Kind of random, and unrelated to the podcast, but Trey Murphy has somehow grown something like 3 inches in the last year and is now listed at 6-7. Every recruiting site had him at 6-4. I still assume he'll get some decent minutes this year, but it's never easy to adjust to growth spurts like that.

That’s NBA shooting guard size. If you can hit 40%+ of your 3s like he did in HS and you’re 6’7 it’s hard to stop.

But I agree it can throw in some coordination issues.

He and Peterson should give us a much-needed boost on offense. Both 6-7, versatile, and can shoot the heck out of the ball. Didn't have those guys that could stretch the floor last year.
