I actually agree with this; but his passing mediocrity is not due to the fact the he has not been given every opportunity to develop. He is our QB for two reason, he takes care of the football reasonably well. and he is a better than average runner. Given the incredible strength of our defense, these are two important attributes.
I am really interested to see the 1st Q interception he had. He was quoted earlier in the week that his job is not to turn the ball over to paraphrase. Sounds like Carey. Truth is he is right. The interception led to either a fg or td, I forget.

Of course the 2nd OT fumble almost lost the game.

This team needs a steady offense to win. The defense is that good.

RE: EMU Game Observations
It was deflected and not his fault but the number of three and outs might as well be as detrimental as an interception. I’d rather see a few picks as long as the QB is capable of leading TD drives. Childers doesn’t have that ability without Harbs leading the way. He may be able to do it once maybe twice but I do not see the ability to consistently lead drives like Maddie or Hare.

I will try to give you the same football lesson as I did a few weeks ago when you made the ridiculous statement that crossing patterns don’t work against a zone D...as if all zone defenses are the same.

You made the comment that Harbisom’s carries were all the same play. My point is unlike yesteryear’s offenses, there is no 43 lead (4 back following the fullback through the 3 hole) with this offense. This offense gives the back the opportunity, when given the ball, to read the OLine’s zone blocking scheme. It is the same play, but with the freedom given to the RB to pick a hole based on what he sees. Harbs was likely seeing the same hole open up so that’s why 1 play with different options appears like the same play. And, yes, the QB can pull the handoff at any time he sees an opening. Simple fact, no debate.

Why would you cross all the way to another defender’s zone? 03-lmfao
And yes. I would like to see more than just 1 play planned for the best player on the team... 03-lmfao

If the QB has the option to pull the ball out whenever he wants please explain to me why Childers’ head is always down on the handoffs. 03-lmfao

Let me give you a football lesson. In the west coast offense the option route for the crossing route against a man is stopping before you cross into another zone if the defense switches to a zone.

RE: EMU Game Observations
I was very pleased with Childers running. Not just the yards but he was running hard. I agree that he is a long reception or two from being a decent QB. Maybe it is a confidence thing; if he hits a few maybe he will take it to the next level.

I think our WRs are developing nicely. Robinson looks like he could be special and Tucker is coming around and I am delighted to see his punt returning – sure hands and good yards, so we are looking OK in the future for WRs.

It was good seeing us going for it at the end of the first half. I was so happy to see the coaches go right back to Harbs after the fumble and it paid off. Good decisions by the coaches.

Harbs is IMO the clear #1 RB especially with his ability to make something out of nothing/yards after initial contact. I like Nettles as a change of pace speed guy but think Harbs should be the feature back.

What a great surprise with Jones-Davis! I thought he would be OK but he was all over the field yesterday making play after play and I think we will continue to see him making plays and big impacts.

Pugh is not making tackles he normally would. As much as I like to see the heart and I think he is an important part of the D maybe he should sit and get healthy. In the few parts of the game I was able to watch (I am so happy there are no more ESPN+ games) Carey was talking to Pugh as he came off the field after the EMU TD run in OT when Pugh did not make a tackle you would normally see him make.

We are relying too much on our D. I am fairly sure we did not have 100 yards of O in the second half. After getting up by 3 pts. we seemed to take the air out of the O. That is too much pressure to put on the D, and we need to take be more aggressive on offense in order to compete for the West.

We dodged quite a few bullets yesterday and our players don’t quit! They could have yesterday and at FSU. A lot of things can be overcome with attitude and heart and our players have both! That alone should give us hope for the rest of the season.

Both pics were deflected? I know the second one was but I didn’t see the first.

Childers did run better. He’s still having trouble on the reads I think and sometimes keeps when he should give. Did better in the pocket passing however so hopefully that is a sign of good things to come. Didn’t see the first pick. Thought should have gotten the ball out quicker on the second pick with a rusher coming. Game reminded me of Wyoming a couple years ago where Hare fumbled in OT. Thankfully we were able to pull this one out. Ball St is improved and we are 4 or 5 pt favorites so we must take care of business. The rest of the schedule is really tough as well.

RE: EMU Game Observations
After 5 games (two in MAC play) I think we can finally say this offense is not going to magically turn it on. It is what it is with Childers at the helm. We won't make big plays so we need to be effective at running and our kicker needs to make EVERYTHING. Definitely a painful offense to watch. Next up we have two opponents who scored over 50 points in their last contests.

This very confusing comment is a great example of my lack of football knowledge point.
What is the zone? Is it 2 deep; 3 deep; quarters, Nickle? Are the corners pressing then backing off? There are all types of situations which make your “play” effective or ineffective. You made a senseless comment that you don’t beat zone defenses with crossing routes; this is simply wrong. A zone is typically beat by forcing one defender, who is defending a specific area of the field, to cover multiple routes in his zone of responsibility. This is achieved in a multiple of ways. One of the most effective ways is a running a seam and a cross route in the same zone. The defender has to choose on route allowing the other receiver to be open. It could also be two of the same patterns (i.e. out routes; one over, one under) in the same zone. NIUs “go to”” play is a great example of using a crossing route to beat a zone; that play has the QB rolling out right, the zone to the QBs left is cleared with deep and crossing routes, then the right TE crosses the field to the vacated zone for a QB throw back. You’re welcome for the free football lesson.

Does anyone know what injury Tears suffered during the game? I saw him walking toward his (i assume) mother in the crowd about three times and he was noticeably limping but it didn't seem that severe.

I haven't heard about the injury but also saw him limping on sidelines. Didn't seem severe but it was pretty noticeable. I think he was injured on this play vs FSU:

This offense feels similar to the Michael Turner days of old: two tight ends, one back, pick a hole and let 'er rip. Nothing wrong with it. It works if you have a guy like Harbison who gets yards after contact. I do have an issue when they try to run those plays with Nettles. It seems like it would be much better to try to get him in space. His big play ability is untapped as of yet.

What scheme were they running when Wolfe was here? That seemed to work with a smaller RB. 02-13-banana

Can someone answer this one for me please:

Remember the "jet sweep"?

We show it often but have we ever handed it to the "sweep" guy this year? Serious question.

Not that I can recall. We seem to be using it as a fake only. Even though in the last couple of games they have the man in motion fake receiving a handoff, run past, turn around and then I think the RB got the ball twice on the return against EMU.
