Question - Streaming TV channels
It felt good in my wallet when I dumped Direct TV and started using Sling on my ROKU. However, Sling has some issues. Picture quality on ESPN is often bad, and is delayed noticeably behind "gamecast" apps. Plus, Sling does not offer CBS-SN, and UC has a # of both fb and bb games on CBSSN.

I have tried and rejected several of the "European rebroadcasters" - unreliable and they seem to be a good way to get malware in your systems. I want to be able to just turn my TV on and find the right channel without drama.

A little research shows alternatives:
Playstation Vue @ $49.99 plus tax - includes CBSSN and all the ESPN variants and many Fox.
YouTube TV @ $40 plus tax - includes CBSSN and all the ESPN variants and many Fox
Hulu Streaming @ 39.99 plus tax - includes CBSSN and all the ESPN variants and many Fox
Other options I spotted seemed to be missing these elements I was looking for.

Finally my question(s):
If you have experience with any of these 3, how is their picture quality from ESPN and CBSSN?
Do you have the delay issues I have noted with ESPN on Sling?
Any issues logging onto ESPN3 with these provider settings?

Thanks - and feel free to add other notes as appropriate.

Have you considered Spectrum (Time Warner) streaming? I left DirecTV after 14 years because they kept raising their pricing every year and I got tired of lost signal due to inclement weather. I was already a spectrum customer for internet and LAN line phone services so I switched to them for cable because they practically threw themselves at me with an offer. One of our TV's is a 4K Roku interface model and through an app I stream the Spectrum package of channels. At one point, they were offering a limited number of channels (your choice) for $29/month. The signal does skip/get fuzzy at times but I believe it has more to do with my wireless router. It's over 5 years old and I probably need to upgrade. The picture quality is otherwise perfect for CBSSN/ESPN/FS1, etc.

Really, hmm
I was able to watch one earlier game on that this year. But not the Ohio University game. It just had a Reddit game thread. No video

Did I miss it or did you watch that game on some other streaming site?

I've had good luck lately using vipbox especially using the "recommended" stream (whatever that means). It seems like there's always at least 2 streams and often 3-4 or more.

RE: Question - Streaming TV channels
I dumped Sling for YouTube TV and I’m thrilled. It has all of the channels I want (like CBSSN), it’s fast, and the picture looks good. Unlimited DVR, too.

+1 for YouTube TV. Has PS Vue for two years and it's good too just a little more expensive for the channels I need. Quality is similar.

Same here...I'm very happy with the switch.

Thanks for answers.
I had a question about the original post.

1. Are people just using YouTube TV right on your laptop? Is it as simple as that? Or you have to do it through Hulu or Rocky or something? Do you have to stream it thru something or I can just use my regular Internet provider

2. Also does YouTube TV have NBA? The main things I want are Bearcat games and some Golden State Warriors to watch Jacob, and Lakers for sure. Can I do that on YouTube TV?

3. I don’t mind trying it for a month $40. Do I just make an account and then just search the game I want to watch?

Thanks!
You guys are great!

I watch YouTube TV on my TV through my Roku. No idea about the NBA, that’s not my thing. But there’s a guide just like anything else. You get local channels, too.

RE: Question - Streaming TV channels
I did a bit of research and went with YouTube tv. I have been really happy with it so far. Lots of sports channels that you can share between 6 devices. If I can catch WiFi signal I can watch live or recorded tv anywhere. I was at another game watching UC/uconn.

You can look to share the subscription. 2 devices at once.

RE: Question - Streaming TV channels
YoutubeTV on a roku is the best service out there. Reliability of Google (parent company) is worth more than $40/month.

I also have the YoutubeTV app on my iPhone and I'll watch games that way in a pinch. Quality is great on any device I've used.

Hell, I was camping out at East Fork Lake this past weekend and caught every snap of the UC game.

And, yes, YoutubeTV has the NBA tv channel.

Thanks, that is the feedback I was looking for. The idea of Sling is good, their execution falls short.

It looks like I can set up a family subscription log in so my wife can watch what she wants on the TV (Roku), laptop, or phone. Cool. (Probably some limitations in there I have not uncovered yet.)

RE: Question - Streaming TV channels
YouTube TV is great. I went through trials on most of the streaming services to see which I liked best, and YouTube won out. A few channels missing that I would like to have (HGTV, Comedy) but every sports channel I would ever want except for NFL Network is on it and the quality and interface are fantastic. Also I think you get 3 simultaneous streams which is nice when the Bearcats and Buckeyes (wife is an alum) play at the same time.

RE: Question - Streaming TV channels
I know you left out DirecTV Now assuming because they were missing something you were looking for but I've been a pretty big fan of them since they came out. I use them and love what they provide less a few negative points. Each service has pros/cons and DirecTV Now's pros are great for me and their cons aren't a big deal in my situation.

CONS
-They only allow two simultaneous streams which is low but I live by myself so it isn't an issue.

-They are still working out kinks on pause/rewind, and DVR. I don't watch many TV shows, mainly live sports so the DVR and playback isn't a huge dealbreaker.

-Not sure how price points compare to other services but I believe they may be a bit higher. They start at $40 a month but you'll have to go up to $55 to get ESPNU and other premium sports channels.

PROS

-If you have good internet, the streams are crystal clear quality with little to no hiccups.

-Clean interface.

-As others mentioned with other streaming services, they have the app which works flawlessly and you can watch anywhere. I was at a Blue Jackets game around this time last year and was watching an Indians playoff game on my phone at the same time.

-All local channels are included so there's no need to flip between an antenna and the box. Was a big deal originally but I'm not sure if all services now offer the local channels.

-Speaking of boxes, often times they run promotions if you prepay for 3 months you get a free Apple TV which is a hell of deal especially if you've considered buying an Apple TV. 3 months of $40 service is $120 and Apple TVs normally cost close to $200. No contracts so if you don't like the service, cancel after 3 months and keep the box.

Just my two cents from being a hybrid cordcutter and going with DirecTV Now. All services are different and have their pros/cons.

RE: Question - Streaming TV channels
Looks like the biggest CON to DirectvNow is that CBSSN is not on the $40 tier. You have to go up 2 tiers to $75 to get that channel. Since so many of UC games will be on CBSSN, not going to be the best services during the sports season. I'm on the last month of the initial promo of $5 per month, so when it runs out, I'll be switching over to YouTubeTV.

RE: Question - Streaming TV channels
I have two older tv's - one Vizio with internet apps and an even older Sony (non internet).

I've already checked the Vizio and Youtube TV and Hulu are not supported on it.

Question - will a Roku or other device allow me to get Youtube TV on these older tv's? Is anyone else using one of those devices?

Will the Roku Express get the job done? According to their website it should.

Thanks

Roku, AppleTV or Chromecast will work with your older Sony as long as it has an available HDMI input. If not, there are HDMI switchers available that will allow multiple HDMI sources to use a single HDMI input on your TV. However, if the Sony is a very old HDTV it may not have any HDIM inputs.

Both tvs have HDMI input. Thanks!
