Agreed. Kept waiting for them to talk about McClelland, Thomas and Jackson all playing significant minutes as true frosh, not to mention Robinson and Ridder as RS frosh. Along with all the other Sophomores at key positions. Could have talked a lot about the recruiting chops of Fickell & Co. and how that's contributing to the re-build of the program.

I think the announcers were just looking for a way to put a positive spin on UConn's performance and future prospects. As opposed to saying "Cincinnati is a really young team too. Only their young players are actually good."

You could tell what they were given in the production meeting.

UCONN: Talk about youth on the defense

UC: Talk about the hot start 4-0/5-0

I mean they did not have much to talk about with UCONN, which is why they kept talking about the defense. I don't need announcers to rosterbate all over our team. They were neutral and called a pretty good game.

Also, Doaks was a TT recruit as well at Rb.

Yup. Would be 18 of 22 if he was available...

And yet we are one of the four youngest teams. Comments above re the coaching of the talent scream truth.

Coaching is clearly the big factor, but we've also got quite a bit more depth now that we had when he was here. We're playing a lot of guys, and you have to do that if you want to play fast particularly defensively. I've been very surprised by the number of guys playing on both sides of the ball in close games. The two transfers on the offensive line have been critical.

Agreed.

Plus, UConn's defense is ridiculously young. 5 starters were in high school last year. No Juniors or Seniors starting.

BTW - was it Lewis who dropped the wide open TD pass last year at Michigan?

The backbone of our team is Tubberville recruits. I don't think Tubbervilles staff ever recruited that poorly, they just were never able to develop players.

We are bringing in a higher caliber of players now, but the it was poor coaching and bad habits that took us down to our low point. A lot of those Tubberville recruits had talent.
^^^^
THIS!

Not only did Tuberville and his staff not develop talent, they also appeared unable to adequately USE the talent they got. (See "Ralph David Abernathy IV running up the middle.")

I always said that I think Tuberville's greatest weakness here was that he sees himself as the "CEO/Head Coach," in which his job was basically "hands off" and to "let the kids play." Right down to the fact that players were free to swap themselves in and out of games. He (Tuberville) let his coordinators call the game and he largely would be on the sidelines "managing" the coordinators.

I prefer a Head Coach who is more involved in teaching and forming "his" team. And that's what we have with Fickell, I think.

Nah.

As CliftonAve stated Tubs biggest issue was that the quality guys that he had left him. There's nothing wrong w/the CEO/HC role. Plenty of coaches act in that capacity. B. Bowden is perhaps most famous for doing as much. The issue is when you run out of star underlings you're screwed.

Despite popular opinion, Tubs recruited well enough for us. The team is in a better position post his regime vs post CBJ. The OL & DL are stocked with his guys - almost exclusively w/Boyd being the one exception. Whereas CBJ left gaping holes along both lines. Furthermore, when you look at the guys that have made it to the next level Tubs again bests CBJ. And the way our safeties, Bryan Wright, and Des look he's likely to have more future NFLers.

Tubs took the long view on recruiting at UC. Get kids, RS them almost exclusively, allow them to live in your system for 5 years, and by the time they're 4 or 5 year kids they'll be contributors. He took in a lot of projects, yes, however better that than reaches for suspect kids that will wash out at higher rates - which was the CBJ approach. Hence the high rates of attrition in his classes.

The good news is we got a coach who could take those kids left behind, and DEVELOP them. Another weak point in the Tubberville regime - which ties back to the churn in his staff. CLF has a crew of coaches that are - at least for now - not chasing the next gig. They're establishing continuity, and allowing the kids to develop and be their best selves on the field. As good as the talent is we have on this team i have a lotta doubts they would've developed and taken a big step in the way they have this season. So making the change was obviously the right call.

RE: Tuberville Recruits?
We should not forget the car crash TT's first year that cost him 3 redshirt freshman.

An OL, WR, and DB if my memory is correct - the three position groups that we seemed to talk about most that past several years. Now how well they might have developed under TT's staff is another question.

I am glad for the switch from TT to LF, but sometimes things really do happen. Great coaches find a way to overcome them. (How many QB's did Kelly go through his first year?)

Mauk was the leading passer in 11 of 13 games, he was injured for 2 games that season, so I would say that's not necessarily a great similarity.

2008 might be a better comparison, that year we had significant playing time from Grutza (before he got hurt) Chazz Anderson, and then Tony Pike.

UC had a pretty wild history of QB injuries from 2008-2016.

RE: Tuberville Recruits?
Forgive my bias but I would trade back the previous coach regardless of who was recruited during his tenure. The university paid this bum $2.2 million to drive our program backwards several years. The product on the field was an embarrassment in bowls and against anyone with a pulse. I'm sorry, but that's a lot of money to get paid to be a recruiter since he couldn't coach himself out of a compost bag. I understand the OP but I would rather talk about what our current, legit head coach AND recruiter is doing for our football program than some jack off who took us all for a ride.
