Saying that doesn’t mean Carey hasn’t made some bone headed calls and personnel moves. Or that he oversees that mess at offense. But good qbs make messy offenses run well. If you’re blaming Carey’s in game decisions for losing games, that also means you believe NIU has the talent to win those games. That in turn means you support Carey as a recruiter.

Carey IMO is average. That’s all he is and why no one else wants him. Who would want an average Mac coach? He didn’t ruin NIU. He does good. He does bad. Im going to remind you all of something I repeat over and over here in response to the “program is being ruined from the greatness it was built into” crowd. - NIUs glory years were built on 5 straight seasons of the WEAKEST SCHEDULE in the country. Almost every season our SOS was one or two spots from the very bottom. Combine that with the 2 best QBs we’ve ever had and that right there is your - NIU is an elite G5 nonsense. We beat NO ONE in that stretch. Since our SOS has moved up quite a bit and we’ve struggled at QB our winning has declined. Crazy how that works. That doesn’t cover the times Carey makes major mistakes, but it’s the major reason NIU has declined in wins.

Wow. That puts things in perspective better than I expected. We did have a few victories over ranked MAC opponents (akron, toledo) but there we always 2-4 MAC teams at the bottom of college football every year that made for easier victories. I just didn't realize the sos was that bad.

No. You clearly stated NIU won multiple conference titles with the weakest schedule in the country. While true, I posted those multiple conference title stats. Quoting you is just out of necessity to demonstrate ill-informed opinions about NIUs “greatness of yore”

Better QB rating in conference title game, what an obscure stat to mention. You just cherry picked something random and assigned some holy value to it. What a terrible way to try to prove a point.

When these kids committed to NIU the senior class was 46-10 with three MAC Championships, a bowl win and an Orange Bowl appearance.

It’s not sustainable, we get it. It’s not that the program regressed, it’s how big it has regressed.

Carey got handed the keys to a Ferrari and totaled it before leaving the parking lot.

FIRE ROD CAREY!!!
Ok sure I get it, but they have lost so many QBs due to injury and late decommitments. The expectations have to be adjusted. Imho.

I think one conference title and 0 bowl wins in five years is adjusting the expectations.

Should we adjust them to being ok with 0 conference titles and 0 bowl wins in five seasons?

Yes, the concept of the best QBs being the reason a team is successful is just crazy talk. Maybe you should come up with some factual way to prove your point instead of just rambling and crying.

It might not have to be THE best QB but they have to be right up there to win the MAC, almost every year. Thus, Toledo won with Woodside, WMU with Terrell, NIU with Lynch and Harnish, CMU with Lefevour, Toledo with Gradkowski, Miami with Roethlisberger, Marshall with Pennington and Leftwich. A good QB by himself isn't sufficient, but it is required almost every year.

RE: Regression, the fan base, and who is to "blame"
How much of NIU's recent success was due to Harnish and Lynch, who put up insane numbers for several years?

Also, NIU needs to stop pretending it's 2012 and start scheduling winnable pre-season games so the program can get back to winning Mac championships, going to decent bowl games, getting positive national exposure and helping recruiting.

I get the money aspect of sacrificing games to opponents who will pay for the right to keep NIU out of MAC title contention, but that's not fair to the players. It's short sighted. And did the main large donors who stepped up to build facilities do it because NIU was playing (and losing to) big-name teams, or because the program was ascending?

Yes, NIU has beaten Big 10 teams in the past, but we're no longer giant killers right now. It's time to get back to winning MAC championships (or at least our division) and re-building. If Carey can't win with an easier pre-season slate, then we'll be better informed about his long-term potential. Losing early and often can impact a team's psyche for more than a couple of games and cause a domino effect.

The OOC was a bit too tough this year but it shouldn't impact whether we can win the MAC. It isn't like we had a whole bunch of injuries from it.

It takes a good QB to win in football.

Wow. I never thought about it like that before. Thanks for enlightening us with your football knowledge.

Tune in next time for Lesson #2: “Defense wins championships!”

No one thinks it’s crazy talk, it’s just an EXTREMELY obvious observation that you’re patting yourself on the back for.

I really liked our schedule this year and love seeing NIU against a Utah & (FSU occasionally). Easier to get people to watch the games at the bar or host people.

I get the money game and it saved some jobs, but swap one of the P5 away games this season against a sunbelt/CUSA/AAC team at home and the schedule is perfect IMO. 2 OOC away & 2 Home. Ideal IMO.

Good. You’ve mastered lesson 1 and 2. I’m promoting you to football junior high. Your next lesson is this: if a good QB is needed to win, conversely a bad qb means a _______ in winning?

After you research that answer, then apply it 2010-2012 and then again 2015-2018. Before long you’ll have your football GED!

Here’s another question for you. What did Novak do after he crashed his 2003 Ferrari? Sounds like a dangerous car the way you refer to them over and over and over again like NIU is an episode of Magnum P.I.

I’ve made a Ferrari comment ONE time. I challenge you to show me where I’ve mentioned it “over and over and over”. Your post is completely misguided.

(Not a personal attack Lord Stanley. Just asking him to back up a baseless statement against me. He will not be able to do so, so I figure this is the end of the conversation regardless)

Isn’t that just good banter? No personal insults..no idiot, no moron. Just hard sarcasm. There should be a sliding scale of arguing based on the teams record. At 1-3 attitude should be allowed at full throttle.

I think Pugh's latest round of injuries came during the CMU game.
