“ 2022 6'5 guard @CadenMPierce8 has length, vision, and deep shooting range. Well-rounded player that is becoming more explosive. Has offers from UIC and Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Impacted the game on both ends during the last run”

RE: 2022 MBB Recruiting
Even though this recruiting process and current basketball season are difficult and unprecedented, December is when WM coaches put out their first offers for the 2021 class (12/9 Isaiah Folkes, 12/10 Angelo Brizzi, 12/12 Jack Molloy) so I thought it would be useful to look at the 2022 players of interest list. There are around 85 players that have been connected to the Tribe through Twitter (and there are surely more, since Coach Howland only follows two 2022s and I see DoBO Bollinger has followed some but since his account is still private I have not posted about those follows). I checked this list of names against the players that have already been offered, according to Verbal Commits, by the thirteen teams that so far in Coach Fischer's three years have offered the same players as WM most often (Elon, Lehigh, Brown, JMU, Fairfield, Toledo, Ohio, Mount St Mary's, Youngstown St, South Dakota, Milwaukee, Furman, and Bucknell - the last two have not put out any 2022 offers yet though). The following players were on the list of players WM is interested in and have been offered by multiple teams in this group of thirteen:

(4/13)
Jacob Conner 6'9 Dayton, OH
Offers: Toledo, Mount St Mary's, Western Carolina, Winthrop, Wright St, Northern Kentucky, Ohio, Stetson, Miami OH, Marshall, Robert Morris, Youngstown St, and Bryant

(3/13)
Rowan Brumbaugh 6'3 Washington, DC
Offers: George Washington, Elon, Virginia Tech, Georgetown, Boston University, Brown, Richmond, Southern Utah, and Bryant

(2/13)
Bube Momah 6'7 Farmington, CT
Offers: Rice, Lehigh, Yale, George Washington, Columbia, Dartmouth, Holy Cross, Quinnipiac, Siena, Manhattan, and Bryant

Jared Frey 6'4 Columbus, OH
Offers: Miami OH, Toledo, and Ohio

Braeden Moore 6'8 Nashville, TN
Offers: Boston College, Texas Christian, San Diego St, Rutgers, Old Dominion, Ohio, Western Illinois, James Madison, Liberty, Oral Roberts, Rice, and UC Davis

Noah Ross 6'6 Raleigh, NC
Offers: Ohio, Charlotte, Rice, Elon, Florida International, Hofstra, and Eastern Kentucky

If Conner, Brumbaugh, and either Momah or Ross are your first three offers then you start off with a offer for each position (guard, wing, big man).

Won’t it be nearly impossible to offer any 2022 kids anytime soon since the staff has no idea how many of 3 possible scholarships may be available?
If Blair, Scott, and Harvey all decide to take that 5th year that the NCAA allows then we have none available to offer.

Doesn't it go both ways? The coaches need to offer the possibility of an extra year and the player has to decide if they are ready to graduate, play an extra year, or transfer.

All good questions. If any of those guys wanted to grad transfer out for that 5th year do you think they will let us know this soon? My original point is that I’d be surprised to see any offers to 22 kids anytime soon.

RE: 2022 MBB Recruiting
If I were coach, I would know exactly which kids to keep or let go right now, every day of the week. It doesn't need to be kids who have a fifth year. It might be kids who are only a year in or two. Given the transfer portal, I would make it very clear that I am also in charge of who is an isn't on the team. The days of four year commitments are over and schools need to be on the offensive.

I would field the best team year in and year out to compete for the NCAA title. Sure, most teams won't get there, but you get my point.

2022 MBB Recruiting
My main concern with that is, if a scholarship player wants to stay, and Dane releases him prior to 4 yrs, that is a recruitment slippery slope.

So you would tell a Jr right now that has a possible 2 more years of eligible to play that you don’t want him back in 2022? Kind of a difficult situation for the staff to go that route.

I remember a few years ago, that Lefty Drizzle (SP ON PURPOSE) wanted to do that very thing to a player on the JMU team the first year he was hired. Thank God the President of JMU told him no. The player was Dorsey, a graduate of Lafayette high School here in JCC. I can not remember if we ever denied a scholarship to a returning player except for either academic or disciplinarian reasons!! I hope we don't start that tradition here!!

2022 MBB Recruiting
I don't think they will be forcing guys off the team. We aren't talking about taking scholarships away from underclassmen. The players in question most likely will be entering their 5th year academically. Most likely they will be graduating. No players in basketball are promised 5 years coming in.
I think some underclassmen with limited playing time might also want to move on if they are getting bypassed by these freshmen

I’m not suggesting the staff will be forcing guys off the roster. I’m thinking the opposite. Maybe they want Scott, Blair , and Harvey to stay around that 5th year that the NCAA is allowing and that leaves us with no 2022 scholarships to offer this winter unless like you suggested that an underclassmen transfers.

I suppose that is possible. I'm not a coach, but I'd be approaching recruiting like Covid didn't happen and senior eligibility was expiring. Recruit a full 2022 class of your guys that fit your vision going forward. Use Scott, Blair, or Harvey (if they are interested in sticking around) to supplement the roster for surprise transfers or injuries. I'd consider saving a roster spot for a guy like Harvey. Size is always at a premium and we generally lack depth.
