Rice dropping tuition for middle income familes
https://www.npr.org/2018/09/18/649160232...ay-tuition

"...The full scholarships are earmarked for students whose families have income between $65,000 and $130,000. Below that level, the university will not only cover tuition, but also provide grants to cover students' room and board, along with any other fees.

Another part of the program will help students whose family income surpasses the maximum. If a student comes from a family with income between $130,000 and $200,000, they can still get grants covering at least half of their tuition.

The change reconnects Rice to a key part of its legacy, Leebron said. For decades after the school first opened in Houston, Texas, in 1912, Rice didn't charge tuition at all. It changed that policy in 1965...."

Yep.

Rice started charging tuition and then made a huge increase in the tuition when rankings started giving points for the amount of scholarship given....

Rice could have charged $16,000 per year, or they could charge 160,000 per year and then give 90% of students 100% scholarships (said merely for simple math) and scored better in the rankings under the latter than the former scenario. The net cash from tuition to the University is the same.

SOme of this is fuzzy math.... Rice's net cost of attendance is one of the lowest around... especially within the sector where we operate (top 20 school overall.... top 5 undergrad)

Family income below 65k -- Rice ponies up tuition, room, and board.
Income between 65k and 130k -- Rice ponies up tuition
Income between 130k and 200k -- Rice ponies up a portion of tuition
After 200k -- no ride whatsoever.

Really awesome move by Rice. It should really ratchet the competition to get into Rice.

Neat side effect is it will *really* help Div 1 sports programs that dont have all the athletic scholarships to cover a team --- baseball and things like that. Dont see it being much of an impact with FB, but will be an immense boost to baseball.

IIRC, Stanford rolled this view out about 10-15 years ago.

Up until the 1960's the original charter dictated that it would be cost-free. The original charter also dictated that Rice would be exclusively for white males.

The Board viewed that it would be best to file a suit to amend the charter to change the race and sex exclusion, and in the process removed the 'cost-free' provision.

Notwithstanding, the cost of Rice remained absurdly cheap until the mid to late '90s. When I was there the tuition was about 20 per cent the cost of an equivalent private school (think of a today equivalent of 13k a year). But they went on a tuition hike frenzy (like almost all universities) where last year's tuition was close to 45k a year.
