Kent State vs. Ole Miss
Let's just get this thing started for this weekend. If you are coming down South this weekend, make sure you get to the grove early. It is a sight to be seen. Usually the sight is in the form of sundresses, but if cold beverages are your thing, you will not be disappointed.

I know I'm old when I think of the news from Oxford I saw on TV my senior year in high school in September 1962. Who would have thought then that the day would come when Ole Miss had a majority African-American football roster, or even ANY on the football team.

Speaking of old - I remember a day when MAC teams beat SEC teams in a couple bowl games and that was before the major southern teams recruited African-American players.

Enjoy the scenery! I'm hoping to see:

1) Zero stupid penalties.
2) Improvement on special teams, particularly punting and coverage. I believe PSU's average drive started on their 45 last week.
3) Our O-line show that they can support the run game. We have a potentially great trio of RBs in Shaw, Rankin and Matthews.
4) No dropped passes (ahem, Kavious Price). Woody B threw 0 picks last week after throwing a total of 3 in the first 2 games but dropped passes continue to be a problem.
5) Defensive pressure on the Ole Miss QB. PSU's McSorley had all the time in the world last week and he killed us.

I see this as much more than just another non-conference game. It's a jumping off point for the rest of the year. If we can clean up our game and compete for 4 quarters, what a boost that gives us going into MAC play. If we get blown out, it's going to make flipping the switch that much harder when we head into conference. 48-24 Rebels.

Updates on key players per the R-C:

"Lewis is hoping to get Jim Jones back this week. The 2017 First Team All-Mid-American Conference performer actually warmed up for the Penn State game, but was not able to go. Standout junior punter Derek Adams, who has been out since suffering a hip injury just days before the season opener, remains questionable."

RE: Kent State vs. Ole Miss
OLNWFLSH, Ole Miss didn't have an African-American on their football team until 1972. Kentucky was the first to have one in the SEC, in 1967. Even conferences outside the South in those days had "gentlemen's agreements" greatly restricting their numbers. Fortunately, things have changed, with winning becoming much more important than anything else, in all sections of the country.

The Stater and its online site http://www.kentwired.com has been doing some good football coverage. Here’s its preview of the Ole Miss game.

Some nasty storms rolled through the area last night causing a delay to the team's flight. Thankfully they arrived safely in Mississippi around 10 p.m. last night.

So far, the Defense is keeping the game close. The Offense is showing signs of being good, but dropped passes and throws slightly off target is hurting. If Barrett and the WR can clean things up, this game could be close at the end!

TOUCHDOWN!! TV put up the stat that KSU has been in the redzone 11 times, with 7 TDs and 3 FGs. 90% scoring in the redzone. Need to keep stats up like that going into the MAC season.

Penalties keep killing drives but still a good half.

Love our coaching. He is not there to just pick up the check.
We are physically over matched but our schemes are equalizing.

YES!!! I don't feel bad spending a Saturday watching the game. Pretty exciting offense. Unfortunately, the O-Line is starting to show some fatigue, they've given up 7 sacks already (11min left in 3d qtr). If they can hang in a little longer, there could be a chance at the end.

RE: Kent State vs. Ole Miss
Where to start.....how about with the most disappointing thing of the day. 2 KSU fans had shirts made with the logo really big on the front and then on the back it said this:

THE PUNCHING BAG OF THE SEC (and then under that title, it listed all of our games vs. SEC teams and the scores).

That was, IMO, stupidity in it's finest. Those 2 guys really didn't think it through.

We should have been ahead at half. Heading to the 4th qtr. we were still very much in the game. Just ran out of steam defensively (missed tackles) and then the last weather delay pretty much drove the nail into the coffin.

Great news is for the most part, we emerged healthy. I think this team will go .500 in MAC play. I don't know anyone that wouldn't have signed up for that a few months ago. Better days are coming!!!!
