Home Game Idea...
It was announced that the attendance for yesterday's game out-paced our attendance for the Syracuse home opener... So I says... I says to myself... whats the huge difference? Communiversity night is always a big draw... and I question whey we don't make efforts to make EVERY game a communiversity type atmosphere...

I don't see why we can't engage local high school bands for some sort of participation in EVERY game... either inviting say 5 kids from every surrounding school to be part of a pep band that adds value to the band's cheering section... That side of the stadium was ROCKING last night all the way through the second half. Don't necessarily have to put them on the field... in fact I would say leave that to the Communiversity game ... but having local band members from surrounding high schools does multiple things... adds value to that side of the stadium and also likely brings more parents and siblings to the games... Local high schools don't send the same kids every week... so you get more opportunity as a high school band participant to be part of a home WMU game... I think I heard that last night there were 800 high school band members in addition to our own band... figure just half of them bring two parents and a sibling and you have added 2000 (800 band members and 1200 family members) butt's in the seats at Waldo...

Just a thought...

RE: Home Game Idea...
I was at the Army vs Hawaii game yesterday, and West Point did that with local HS bands, who performed with the West Point Band at halftime. Game was already a sellout, but still a good idea. Army doesn't have a student marching band, just a Cadet Pep Band, and then the WP Band, which are soldiers/professional musicians, but much smaller than a college marching band. The high schoolers we great at halftime.

Any idea that gets high schoolers to WMU on a game day is a great idea.

I have a better idea in reference to that Syracuse game. Having our Offense show up 1st half! 03-wink

A very good thought. My son is in the band and had 4 "band buddies" to work with. He said they were great kids and it was the most fun he has had at any game so far. Also, the WMU marketing dept. is not like it used to be. They are not afraid to try new things, it would be nice to see this get some traction. The only other problem is going to be the weather and the night games

The band participation was great yesterday. What I don't understand is why the half-time announcer does not acknowledge the high schools that are participating. The schools and students put a lot of time into preparing for this event and deserve recognition.

It's just a logistics issue. Some bands are represented by a single individual. Maybe 2 or 3. There were around 800 kids. You are literally looking at well over 100 schools.

While I agree with you, I'm not sure there is a meaningful way to do that other than putting something in the program.

A friend suggested today they could scroll the school names on the big screen. They should be able to do that.

All these Week night games can be very hard for high school kids to attend.

I graduated from Portage Central back in 1979, and was a member of the band after my football career was cut short by ACL tears. The high school band night was always a very cool. and marching at Waldo was on of the highlights of the year for us. Of course it also drew family members selling tickets. I am also a bit confused as to why the P.A. announcer did not announce the bands last night, but it was still a cool event as always.

Band Day was a tradition for many years. As was Rotary Club Day, W Club Day, Dad's Day.

And of course Homecoming.

Why not have a youth football day? Give every youth league within a hour of the zoo a $1 GA ticket opportunity.

Does WMU have any type of gameday bus service from GR? Make it stupid simple, round trip transportation to and from the game and a GA ticket for some reasonable price

I like that youth football idea, they do have something like that already, but indoctrinate them early.

The problem with youth band day is the halftime show isn't inspiring and the stand cheers aren't even in unison. One game a season is more than enough.

Back in 2002 or so the band was playing "You Really Got Me" by the Kinks for the Marshall game, and practicing in the morning. The youts just couldn't get past the first few measures, practicing it over, and over, and over again. My window was open, and now I hate that song, still resent my lost sleep, and never want to hear another youth band day again!!!

College Football should be played on Saturday. If the Syracuse game was on Saturday night and the alumni base all over Michigan had the opportunity to drive to Kalamazoo on a day off, there would have been a lot more people in the seats.
