Equally amazing is that was progress/better for Childers.

Real question, worst QB starter since 2003? Mines a toss up between Ryan Morris, graham and Childers. Fiedler doesn’t count

Carey is certainly the worst coach NIU has had since I have been a fan. Not a coincidence 2 of those names on your list are during Carey regime

Ryan Morris was a walk-on and only played bc Novak is a legend and sacrificed wins vs burning Harnish’s redshirt for Coach Kill. He shouldn’t even count on this list.

I am definitely not a Graham fanboy, but he’s better than what Childers has showed at this point. Atleast he throws the ball downfield. What he did at Toledo a few years back after Hare went down is easily far ahead of anything Childers has done

I agree with that. After I posted I kept thinking how Graham came in against the ranked undefeated Toledo team and ended up putting together some good winning drives. Basically won the game after hare got hurt

Everyone has been screaming to run the ball, and we did. We pounded the rock 48 times for 220 yards. I’m not going to penalize the run game with the -40 yard high snap on the punt. Childers threw 3 TD passes to no INTs.

Agree the passing game still has room to improve, but it was a nice step this week. Nice 14 yd TD pass several yards into the end zone to an open Tears. Childers also threw a nice deep ball to an open Tears, looked like they were off by a foot. Look forward to seeing more of that, and Tears catching it. He had a couple steps on his defender, that isn’t part of Wesley’s or Browns game and I certaintly haven’t seen it from the plethora of freshmen receivers.

RE: Marcus Childers - I'm Trying...
You can't finish two drives a game and expect to win the MAC championship. You need a lot more consistency and playmakers. The QB has to be a playmaker and you can't keep your best playmaker (Harbison) on the bench for three consecutive drives. Hopefully, Childers gained some confidence and the coaches gained their senses, but I won't believe it until I see it. I am delighted about the win, but it hasn't given me much hope. Let's see what next week has to offer. I will enjoy the experience in Tally no matter what.

No INTs? Childers airmailed his receiver and was INT by the defender. That makes 4 INTs in three games, plus however many fumbles he has had.

Sigh..

Yes, but like I just mentioned in another thread, check out his weapons the last 2 games...our TE is a backup OT who is 300+ lbs who has barely played in his career here and at a new position, and our WR corps are a majority of freshman with no experience going up against 2 pretty damn good P5 defenses... I re-watched both games a few times, nobody could get open. Childers wasn't good at all, but its not 100% on him. Tears being back should help a ton

Agree on the WR. I was concentrating on the WR yesterday. Not a lot of speed but they take plays off many times, are looking to block rather than look back. Is that planned? The play? Thinking Childers won't look?

There was a play in the 3rd, 3rd and about 8 or something where Brown was going over the middle without a guy in the same zip code.Wide open for a 1st. He just looked straight ahead like he was clearing out. Childers was looking right in his area the whole time. Was it a fluke he was? Not sure since the ball went to the trailing guy behind him short of the 1st down.

There were also plenty of 1/1 oppurtunaties the whole game to be made. I point to the td by Tears. The play before, he was lined up wide right. He had 1/1, only other guy with help was LB short over middle. He blew right past the guy and came back nodding his head since Childers never looked. In fact the corner looked around at his teammates like "wtf, anyone else want to help?" Next play he lines up wide left, 1/1, absolutely no help. He does stutter step, blows by for easy td.

We know that was the play to go to him. Did he say he was going to stutter? Coaches see it? I don't know, but those type of plays were open. You have to take a chance. It doesn't get any easier next week,. FSU may be getting knocked off but I assure you they are going to play single with no fear and go after qb, stop the run. Childers needs to stop zeroing in on guys, make quick decisions. WR, need to understand the coverage they are in, hot WR and ALWAYS be ready. The coaches need to emphasize this with Childers and WR. They better put in the game plan and not think the "no turnovers+ def score= win" game plan we have used vs. other P5 isn't going to cut it.. As I see it there is enough blame to go around here. There was no reason any offense couldn't put up a large # vs. CMU yesterday. They did look better in 2nd 1/2 but 35 yards of offense at 1/2 isn't going to cut it vs. many teams.

You had a long-tenured college football coach in Al Grohl even saying Childers is extremely limited and the best chance is to keep it out of his hands.

You’re right. Forgot about that one. Didn’t show up in the box score since I think it got called back for a defensive penalty. Not sure if the penalty played into the INT.

Either way, I would be very happy with 3 TDs and 1 INT each game with running for 200+. And I think the passing game has a lot more opportunity to grow at this point than stagnate.

I think I would rather see Graham at this point. Sounds crazy to say that but Childers is just not developing.

True, I forgot he got lucky with a defensive penalty away from the ball that negated it.

If it came down to having those two QBs and nothing else, I think I agree with you too. Graham could complete the occasional deep throw.

Stutter? Yes it looked like a double move against 1-1 coverage.

It was funny because he followed that late in the game, saying "Trust your QB"

I agree. This is how bad the situation is when we prefer Graham to Childers.

Miami's defense did not look too hot against Samford. I see that Iowa State has 24 points on Oklahoma with 5 mins left in the 3rd Q. Iowa held them to 3 points. I am hoping that the Iowa and Utah defenses were even better than we thought.

You're thinking of Florida State-Samford. But I doubt our offense scores as many as Samford did against FSU.

You are right it was Samford FSU. FSU is getting shut out by Syracuse; their fans must be going nuts and screaming for the new coach's head! Who would have thought FSU could be our easiest non-conference game.
Taggart is so overrated. Hes going to have inmates running the asylum at fsu. They already were on sidelines yelling at eachother and half ass effort.

RE: Marcus Childers - I'm Trying...
This may have been Carey and his staff’s best coached game. In the first quarter the team was self destructing. His QB was in a full meltdown. Missing open receivers short and long; keeping the ball way too long. Carey could have easily replaced him, most coaches would have. Instead, he continues to stick with his QB, who he has committed completely to developing. The team goes to the solid running game, which opens up huge opportunities in the passing game. He does not ask his struggling QB to do too much. He finally hits a wide open receiver who made runs a great pattern making a DB look silly. The rest of the game we does what is necesaary to win the game, without further eroding the confidence of his QB. If Childers starts to make improvement he can point to how he was handled throughout his career, but in particular this game as being the difference. You have to respect a coach who sticks with his players even when they are struggling, and Childers certainly has been.
