RE: What is ODU football’s “Big picture” problem?
In order of importance:

1. Facilities
2. Better Coaches
3. Game day atmosphere
4. Regional rivalries
5. More donations

In the G5 world our facilities are below average. Stadium is getting upgraded but phase 2 needs to happen. North endzone at a minimum. We don’t have any facilities that have to wow factor for recruits. Game day atmosphere is lack luster. Coaches have boring play calling and don’t have the kids prepared. We need to have a bitter hated rival and always can use more money.

2. Conference geography ? problem
3. Coaching staff ? problem
4. AD ? we'll see
5. Inadequate FBS budget? not a problem. It is at the upper end of G5
6. Fan support? not yet, but a potential problem

I would distinguish between FBS budget and FBS Football budget.
Yes our budget is adequate for all sports, but maybe that's part of the problem. To many sports, some of which clearly drain money from football budget.

Inadequate FBS football budget

AD with no vision

Get those 2 in line and the others will fall into place.

RE: What is ODU football’s “Big picture” problem?
So there is something that other schools with similar budgets are doing which for some reason isn't working for us or we might not even be attempting what they are doing. Appy State, Troy, Ark St, LaTech and few others. Is our FB budget not really on par with them? or what is that, that is eluding our Admin because frankly those schools seem to have smaller budgets and the only thing that is very obvious i can see are FB Stadium and established FB tradition. I am not underestimating the impact of stadium and tradition but damn if we can't afford similar coaches then we are in a deep doo doo.

yep my sister is their Alumnus and while their campus and education both suck they seem to be getting it done on the FB field. I have been to Troy AL, its the size where you can't call it a village nor a town but they are doing improvements to their FB facilities and seem to be progressing fine. I have to confess it hurts really bad seeing what they are doing and where we are.

North Texas taking it to Arkansas. Whether they win or not, they are miles ahead of us in facilities and coaching. We have a lot of growing up to do.

The Band. It is stale.
Specifically, the 3rd down (on defense) music is the same for 10 years. It sucks and hasn't worked because we haven't played well on 3rd down.

New stadium - New music.

Facilities. Facilities will improve recruiting. Recruiting will improve winning. Winning will improve the fan base. The Fanbase makes the game day experience. And coaching. And money, But we seem to be pretty equal with our peers in terms of budget. But for some reason we just don’t seem to get much bang for our buck.

The programs you listed have a decade or decades jump on us. For instance, Troy started their program in 1909. That built in advantage can't be underestimated. But we can overcome it. It'll just take time and a FBS coordinators

I have looked at the top 130 every year since the similar App State discussion on this board. I can find little or no correlation between ranking and program age.

Can you find a correlation between facilities and program age, since facilities seem to be the one thing folks keep bringing up? Hard to match other programs on facilities when they don't have to deal with Virginias student fee law and have had decades to build.

I can find the 5 oldest stadiums, however it will take some time to analyze
the associated support facilities.
To your question, I am not convinced that just our stadium is the answer to our facilities issues.
