What is ODU football’s “Big picture” problem?
You can't compare to the P5. Even P5s In old stadiums are spending hundreds of millions to update facilities because they are old. How does ODU compare to Marshall, Charlotte, App and Coastal Carolina. That's the real question. Are you losing recruits because of facilities? Coaches?

Panama makes a good point...if we’re comparing to G-5, I don’t see much of a delta in spending and facilities. However, if I ask myself if I think we can win a conference title in 3 years with the current staff, the answer is no.

Can you find a correlation between facilities and program age, since facilities seem to be the one thing folks keep bringing up?

I can find the 5 oldest stadiums, however it will take some time to analyze
the associated support facilities.
To your question, I am not convinced that just our stadium is the answer to our facilities issues.

You dont need to research anything. Just use some logic. Is it easier to build competitive practice facilities, weight rooms, student athlete support facilities and a stadium over a 50 year period or ten years?

Then we have a bigger problem. Other than the stadium, our athletic facilities, including gyms weight rooms etc, are very good.

The only thing we don't have is an indoor football practice facility, and most G5s don't have that anyway.

There are a number of top P5s playing in stadiums older than ours.

Although I have been a proponent of the facilities=recruits paradigm, a comparative analysis of our facilities does not seem to equal a recruiting rank of 128 out of 129.

Agree totally with this comment. Facilities is just another convenient excuse. I don't think that our situation can be put on facilities .... have not heard a recruit wanting to go to a program with great facilities that don't get half filled on game day. Use to be a 'bragging point' for Wilder in showing potential recruits how great our fans and the stadium excitement is ...... nothing to do with size/shape/amenities of the stadium. What makes facilities great is tradition and the people who fill them up on Saturday. So, while facilities upgrade would be good .... I'm not buying that as a significantly determing factor -- odu has fine player facilities.

taking somethings from the other post pertaining to ODU growing as an FBS University....IMHO the order would be:
1) Facilities including gutting and cleaning up the surrounding areas of campus. (this is where the CITY must step in), and indoor practice facility
2) Better coaching staff
3) School Pride and student engagement
4) Academic rep
5) Conference

The cost of our practice facility and other football amenities lies in one or two of these budget draining sports. Get the axe out Wood.

Sometimes you have to make difficult decisions. That is what Wood and JB get paid the big bucks for. The popular decision it's not always the correct decision.

2 is the most important
Re: 1, most G5 schools do not have an IPF and cities are divesting from the real estate development business. You would do better finding a development partner who is willing to redevelop the area with an emphasis on live/work/play centered around ODU.

I hate to cut sports, but honestly, As long as we kept football, basketball, women’s b-ball, soccer, field hockey, baseball and wrestling it’s ok by me. Maybe keep women’s golf, swimming and volleyball for Title 9 if needed. Especially since we have the facilities already. If that would make football and basketball better, just do it.

We don’t have a big picture problem. Our key issue is a QB problem. Insert Washington or Taylor in the lineup and we are back in the hunt.

It starts with coaching.
I don't think money is as big problem as everyone thinks, else they would not have never made the jump.

Maybe. But we also made the jump with thousands of people on a waiting list for season tickets, $1.2 million in annual conference revenue and no Cox bill holding us back. Thats not the case now.

And with all that we still have a higher athletic budget than most in the G5. We have room to find some money.

All of those programs have a nicer stadium than us right now. Until we see the new stadium, it's hard to say if we will close that gap this off-season or not. I think it will make a big difference, but we will need to wait a while to see how it impacts recruiting.

No problem. We just have to play Top 10 teams every week.

We're adding another sport (W Volleyball) very soon, so we'll be at 20.
