RE: MBB UN-O at Rice
The game on Friday was was a flat-liner from the start. There was no interior defense, very little energy on the defensive end and no one stepping up to lead. Poor energy on the court and lousy rebounding. The defense got beat off the dribble time and time again. Early in the game, Rice attacked the interior but after the Owls first 4 points the Owls moved their offensive game to the perimeter and could not buy a bucket. I spent a good part of the game yelling at the Owls guards to sprint through their off ball screens instead of jogging. (a major pet peeve of mine, if a coach like Izzo saw that type of lethargic execution there would be hell to pay). I really want to see this team gel and surprise people in conference play, but they have a lot of growing up to get there. Right now it feels like they are really missing court leadership with the exception of Robert Martin, although Chris Mullins is becoming a force on court. He is not (yet?) a vocal leader as a freshman to bring other players up to his level of intensity and commitment on court.
