Some Sutton Smith Tidbits
Since last night was depressing let's appreciate how good Sutton Smith is.

Let's not take this kid for granted. He is going to go down as an all-time Huskie great. He didn't have his A game last week but boy, did he make his presence known last night.

Here's his current stat line:
GP: 2; Solo: 10; Ast: 3; Total: 13; TFL-Yds: 5.5 - 21; Sacks No-Yds: 3.0 - 12;

His Current National Rankings
(according to http://stats.ncaa.org/rankings/change_sport_year_div):
- Sacks: Tied 3rd
- TFL: Tied 4th
- FF: Tied 20th

He are some comments I found on twitter last night:

Brian Swinney
@thebrianswinney
"Sutton Smith would be the best defensive player in the pac 12 in my opinion"

The Former UteCentral
@utecentral
"Was there any game planning for Sutton Smith? Never seen Utah dominated by a single defensive player like this."

Steve Tate
@tate28
"Sutton Smith and Britain Covey. Two players that didn’t have offers from any other schools."

reel Brown Trout Ute
@SALMO3T
"Sutton Smith making Utes look slow and weak"

PT3
@PatrickT30
Sutton Smith making his case for Mayor of Sack Lake City

Steve Tate
@tate28
"Ok. Please don’t hate me for saying this but that DE Sutton Smith for NIU is the real deal. I believe it’s pronounced Su-tahn Smith."

Ben Anderson
@BensHoops
"Sutton Smith is single-handedly keeping NIU in this game. His pressure off the edge has totally thrown off the Utes offense."

He's an animal on the field. He deserves all the accolades and good press he can get.

Of course not. VCB only sells #1 and they refused to order any other number.

I definitely enjoyed watching a nice powered offense like what the Huskies used to have in the past, but I'm really tuned in to watch what this defense can do each play and look forward to what this defense can muster up when they get on the field.

You know, make the guy feel good. Even though even he would think we're nuts.

The football jerseys I bought at the Athletics garage sale last month were #15. Those jerseys were from way before Sutton was a Huskie, but I just had to have something with his number.

It's a shame that the bookstores can't pick up on his hype and stock #15 jerseys. I mean, c'mon, how hard is it?

What was with the new bookstore promo during the game? Is VCB still a sponsor?

Fantastic player. I read up on him before the game, and I was hoping the hype was more bark than bite. But, wow--my hopes were dashed--he's a great player. Good luck going forward. This Ute fan was impressed by your team.

Go Huskies!

Haha, thought same.

At game I said it's so strange the best defensive player and worst offensive player on field for NIU are the same number. I bet if they switched Smith could play QB better than Childers.At least running with the ball.

Big fan of the qb, huh?

I love how they have double numbers on the team.

RE: Some Sutton Smith Tidbits
I spent a lot of time last week and this listening to Salt Lake City sports radio because they talked NIU football more than our Chicago stations will do in a lifetime. Sutton Smith got higher praise than any of the local Ute players.
Going into the game, many from SLC doubted NIU and weren't quite sure what to make of Smith, but all became believers afterwards.

“Sutton was nightmare,” said Hans Olsen, a former NFL lineman who analyzes Utah and BYU game film for Salt Lake City’s 1280AM. “(Utah) was going against one of the best run defenders in the county. He’s fun to watch.”
“Sometimes, you hear about guys playing in the MAC against garbage offensive linemen and maybe Smith isn't going to be as good as anticipated,” Olson’s radio partner Scotty Garrard said on their mid-day show. “He was wrecking dudes in the backfield and can get after it. The kid’s the real deal.”

These were just two of multiple comments heaped on the Huskie defense by hosts of numerous shows out there. For sure, I'll be back their dial when NIU plays BYU.

I can only imagine what they said about our pitiful passing offense and QB. This is going on the 3rd year now of terrible offensive play.

I really think he will be a safety or a hybrid LB in the NFL. He has the speed, size and strength. He just doesn't have the size to be a DE in the league. NIU has done a great job of trying to get his weight up but not lose any of his natural athleticism.
