If thats your opinion, fine. If its based on transitive properties, its based on a faulty premise.

I know we arent good right now. I also know their is a big gap between FCS and FBS for the most part. William and Mary is awful, for example.

And JMU is really a pretty good football team. They should have beaten NCST. Nova, NH, Maine, Richmond. I'm just glad they're not on our schedule. I feel comfortable saying we should curb stomp VMI

RE: Was moving a mistake
The mistake in moving to the FBS was the University thought that the $3M buy in was all that was needed. We needed another $25M plus the stadium and indoor practice facility to be competitive. You cannot cheap your way into the FBS.

Huge mistake. 10 years too early with the wrong coach.

I still say it was not a mistake, but we did not do it the way we should have. We should have fund raised like hell and done our athletic facilities the right way from the beginning. Even our basketball practice facility is marginal. People forget what the CAA was turning into, and we could not have stayed in the CAA period.

I don't know if it was a mistake, but we don't seem to be able to spend the money for the resources needed to compete. I will also say, as a fan, I had just as much fun (maybe even more) when we were in AA.

None of it matters because both programs are in the same boat, we need a G5 realignment. CUSA is not sustainable for ODU (would not have been for JMU either). JMU spending G5 money on a fcs product, don't now how long that can last?

A tight east coast G5, if teams are up or down, does not matter if the schools love to hate each other or just hate each other is even better.

What do you think the difference would be? We'd save what? 500K - 1 Million in Travel expenses? Maybe a little better fan engagement and attendance? I like playing most CUSA East teams and wouldn't give up playing Marshall, WKU, MT to go back to W&M and JMU. I'd like more regional rivals but the economic impact is oversold, mainly by JMU's admin. Do you need me to break out the financial statements again to show you that staying in FCS and spending the same money is definitely the worse decision financially? Sure you win but it's not exactly a fair fight and JMU is running huge deficits every year. ODU at least balances the budget and has funds for rainy days. And it's certainly raining now.

So no, I have no interest in going back. Yes, JMU and many more FCS would probably beat us but not necessarily on talent but definitely on coaching.

I would never suggest "going back" if you mean back to fcs. Not what I meant. I meant ODU may have burned a few bucks jumping to CUSA when it happened, maybe that was the right time, maybe the only time, I don't know all the variables.

All I care about it furthering the Geo5 conversation. I doubt JMU would accept an invite from CUSA now because the JMU admin is 99.7% convinced that a G5 shakeup is inevitable. It would benefit ODU big time (and others) and it is the only acceptable route to 1A for JMU. It makes sense. Travel is a killer financially and takes attending away games away from fans. Class time is impacted and nobody gives a **** about schools 1,800 miles away.

JMU's AD would rather approach a G5 shake-up as top ranked fcs program with infrastructure in place; stadium, COA and coaches salaries compared to a position of a broke back 2-5 year transitional.

Who is right? Who knows or cares, ODU and JMU (and others) need a G5 shakeup.

RE: Was moving a mistake
Why wait? What would be different that would make us in a better situation if we were still FCS? We had/have the fan base based on ticket sales and donations. We’re actually one of the highest in G5 in those combined categories outside the AAC. What did we need to wait and grow? Does anyone think the facilities would be better or further along in FCS. I certainly understand the frustrations with the administration and think we need to consider a change in coaching staff. But I don’t see a whole lot of upside in FCS.

First, I do not believe that we would beat JMU this year, or last year either.

As far as the decision to move up, it was absolutely the correct decision at the time.

1. Joining a healthy, vibrant CUSA was a no brainer; especially with ECU just down the road. That ECU would leave so soon was a terrible blow.
2.Additionally, we could not possibly have predicted the negative financial impact that the future Cox Bill would have.

Were those two things known prior to making the decision to move up, we would not (IMO) have made the decision to move up as it would likely have been viewed as fiscally irresponsible.

RE: Was moving a mistake
There was a lot going on with college athletics and re-alignments at the time. It was the correct move then; it's still the correct move now.

That said, I don't see a clear direction from ODU in where they want to take athletics or how they want to leverage the move into FBS. Without vision, it makes it hard for people to buy into an end-goal and the results suffer; unfortunately leadership is lacking in that department.

-When ODU tells me that they need my support for football success, that's vague. I'll give, but I'll give $.
-When ODU tells me it wants to compete for a New Year's Six bowl by 2022 - and here's the plan to do it - that's VISION. I'll give, and I'll give $$$$$.

edit: this speaks true of all sports at ODU.

I agree that it did make sense at the time of the move. ODU was supposed to get $1.2 million each year from media deals, nearly every game on actual television, much greater presence in the press regionally and statewide, and an annual matchup up against ECU as a conference foe. None of that exists today.

Bingo! It’s pretty obvious to folks looking at this a bit removed from ODU football. The ten die hard football fans who post here just can’t see it though. ODU just doesn’t have the money to be an FBS team currently and it doesn’t look good for the next number of years either.

This is the single biggest problem we have today.

With that said I’m glad we moved up to 1-A. Even with our recent struggles our future is much brighter playing ugly 1-A football than being dominate in 1-AA.

We have the largest budget in C-USA. If we don't have the money to compete then someone needs to answer some hard questions. No one ever wants to talk about cutting sports but if we have the largest budget in the conference and can't compete then something needs to give. And now we are getting ready to start volleyball.

I don't think it was a mistake at the time, but it was a mistake in retrospect. When we made the decision, we had Heinicke, were making leaps every year, and seemed to be not that far off from getting at least to the level of an average AAC team. We hung with a good ECU team as well as Pitt in the first season. Then realignment took ECU away and the media money dried up while expenses have grown. Looking back, I wish we hadn't made the move.

I certainly don't think it was a mistake. I just think there's a LOT of catching up and maturing to do at this level that we weren't prepared for. And I might at we weren't preparing for it as noted by man. We were prepared to be the big dogs in FCS for the foreseeable future.

RE: Was moving a mistake
Moving was not a mistake. But it will be if we don't step up with the money to get better facilities. We are being left behind by other G5 programs.

Facility musts:
New complete 30k stadium - Phase 1 gets us to 21k-22k but we need the north endzone badly. The admins are seeing what a terrible student section is doing to the atmosphere.
Indoor practice facility - BW may like to practice in the rain but players dont and whether we NEED it or not. We must have one to compete in recruiting.

Moving to FBS was NOT a mistake. Staying in the CAA would have been, however, for many reasons. We would walk through most, if not all of the CAA schedule even with this years struggling team by the way.

I've been asking this question for years. Where is the wasted money, and when does the admin do something about it. If basketball and football are cash strapped while the AD is spending more money than 95% of not P5 schools, where is the money going?
