Guilty as charged.

And not a bit ashamed of it.

For those of y'all looking for a game to watch, Campbell is hosting Coastal (moved to Buies Creek due to Flo) and are currently up 14 to 7 at the end of the 1Q.

Wow thanks 04-cheers We actually went down to watch ODU play them in that stadium. Although at that time what is now the visitor's side was the home side. The ODU fans sat in temp. bleachers on what is now the home side. Funny but it really doesn't seem that long ago but in some ways it was forever ago.

Coastal up 24-21 at halftime. Doubt many expected the Fighting Camels to give them such a good fight.

Eh, it's not worth watching any more. Coastal has worn them down and are in cruise control now.

Yeah, most models had the storm hitting the Carolinas, heading north and sitting on Virginia for an extended period of time. There was the potential for the need to move over a half a million people from extremely flood prone areas. Thank God it looks like it won't got us, but I am not going to blame the government for being too cautious on this one. I'm cool with a bum week for business if it means less lost lives.

By contrast, the South Carolina governor cancelled a mandatory evacuation for three counties because it appeared the storm would not significantly affect southern parts of the coast. Now the storm is veering back in that direction. That's not to say that they'll get major hurricane conditions but if they decide to evacuate again, how many people who listened the first time won't the second?

I realize that I am stating a highly unpopular view here. But I think you guys have mis-framed the issue.

One of my neighbors is a cardiologist. He had to cancel 15 appointments today because his satellite office is located in Zone A mandatory evacuation. I am certain that if any of these were true emergencies, they would have been relocated to the hospital. But even non-emergency cardiology appointments strike me as important.

Just, apparently, not more important than keeping our elected officials from unwelcome attention by our over-caffeinated media.

And so here we are, heading into a 3rd day of mandatory evacuation for major parts if the city -- over a storm that is now a virtual certainty to do no more than get us wet. It is not, in my view, a matter of our gov't being "too cautious". It is instead a reflection of a gov't that is frightened to do anything other than cover their own butts from media second-guessing -- even when the risks are infinitesimal and the costs enormous.

Permit me to be clear (since even minor ambiguity is an invitation to expressions of scorn and outrage for some in this forum): I am not belittling the severity of this storm. My sincere best wishes go out to anyone here with loved ones on the Carolina coastline. They are in for a dangerously rough ride.

But we are not. And never were -- certainly not as of mid-day on Tuesday when the order went into effect.

The mandatory evacuation order for Zone “A” was announced on Monday, and went into effect at 8:00 A.M. on Tuesday morning.

I get what you are saying. But I feel it's important for me to clarify - there was a lot of uncertainty with this storm. The models only tightened up (aka started agreeing with each other) yesterday. Earlier, there was nothing "steering" this storm and half the models had it hitting us, the other half hitting the Carolinas. I can safely assume our elected officials were using the same data and science as I was to track the storm and to make their decisions, not fear of media.

How many people listened to the mandatory evacuations? Unsure. Will fewer people listen next time due to this exercise? Probably. All that you can do is pay attention to the storm. Look at the data, not the overhyped media. Not Jon Cash posts. Not every storm is the same. Just because we had this one miss doesn't necessarily mean the next ones will too.

Fun fact, the images I posted earlier updated themselves. I was going to use them to compare them to now, oh well. Here is the latest (same images as page 1):

Thanks, D.M.

I know that I am like a whiny dog with a bone on this issue, but it really does annoy me that our elected officials feel no reluctance in toying with us like they have. From Virginia Beach City Manager Dave Hansen this morning:

“An informed citizen would probably have waited to the last movement of the storm before making that decision” to evacuate, he said.

Read that quote a second time. And then consider that he essentially is admitting that our governor, our state emergency director, our city officials, our schools and most of the landlords in the downtown area fall below the threshold of "[a]n informed citizen".

A guy i know tried to leave town. He sat in traffic for 11 hours before turning around and coming home. That was 3 days before any potential storm and only a small portion of Hampton Roads leaving town. Now, imagine the hurricane was going to hit us and we waited until the day before to try to evacuate..............

I can't fault our government from erring on the side of caution.

Agreed. And there are plenty of people in Zone A who stayed. If anything, this taught me that if we ever need to evacuate the entire southside, we are truly screwed.

Shocking that a few folks don't understand how staggered evacs work and why they are the best plan of action. Had the storm shifted in the opposite direction and required Zone B and Zone C to evacuate, what would you be saying now?

Losing an entire week of school and days of commerce was unnecessary and will not likely to be tolerated too many more times moving forward. I understand caution, but this was over the top. Time to revisit the plans... this didn't work. My wife stays home with the kids now, but can't imagine what we would have done a year ago when we both worked. Most people are in that boat and most lower income jobs don't have remote working options or flexibility to just take time off when the sun is shining and they are business as usual. I doubt those that had to take off work unpaid or worry if their job is still there when they return feel any safer from this abundance of caution. This has caused a lot of problems.
