RIP Coach Mazzone
Charlie Mazzone passed away Friday night after a 2 year battle with cancer. Coach Mazzone worked at the University of Memphis for 43 years. He coached the handball team from 1977 - 1996 including 8 consecutive national championships from 1986 - 1993. He leaves behind a wife of 51 years, two children, 3 grandchildren, and a bunch of heartbroken men who played for him. Rest In Peace Coach.[/php]

RE: RIP Coach Mazzone
I had Coach Mazzone for Racquetball PE my frosh year. He taught me to love the sport and I really learned a lot. Dominated my peers for a few years afterwards. Enjoyed it so much, I audited the next semester under Coach Lyles.

RIP

RE: RIP Coach Mazzone
I had the privilege of playing on the first extramural handball team that Memphis State fielded in 1972. We were coached by the late Lige Turman, who had Larry Edwards and Charles Mazzone assisting him. Meeting Charles Mazzone for the first time was like opening your first bottle of champagne. His enthusiasm and effervescence were contagious and he was one of the rare people that inspired anybody lucky enough to be in his orbit. Charles wasn't that familiar with handball initially, but he kept asking the right questions and soaked up knowledge like a sponge. His teams results down through the years speak for itself and he became one of the best collegiate coaches ever. Not having an egotistical bone in his body led to his success. Heaven is getting a good guy. RIP my friend.
