1. as long as we're in a lower level conference we're not too good for them. fickell could easily leave us after a few years and the next coach might drop our program again. miami could re-take control of this game. what if we make 2 coaching mistakes in a row?

2. we dont have much in the way of regional rivals in the American. its nice to have a home game where the opposing team actually brings some fans to help fill up nippert, as well as an easy road trip just a county over. i've said since the big east days that the miami road games sort of teach our fans to travel, as weird as that might sound. its such an easy trip and people learn how much fun it is to follow the team and end up planning more road trips. i've seen the miami game springboard lots of fans to travel to more games.

3. the local media seems to cover us a bit more during miami week each season as it has more local interest. i love hearing the local channels talk about our huge winning streak.

4. its our only remaining trophy game. i dont care if we beat them 100 times in a row, i love beating them! it never stops being fun.

5. i like the new format of every third game downtown. allows us to move beyond the home and home with them, although all 3 locations SHOULD prove to be virtual home games for us.

6. if we want to decide we're "too good" for an opponent, it should be the fcs game

There are only 18 P5 that do not play an FCS and 4 G5 so we are hardly in the minority.

how many other schools complain about being too good to schedule an FBS opponent while being completely ok having a yearly FCS game? that makes no sense!

how does a team coming off back to back 4-8 seasons think they're too good for ANYONE?
i like the schedule the way it is, we should be trying to win as many games as possible at this point.

Answer: All of them.

Go look on message boards of other schools. They all say they need to say they have to stop scheduling certain schools OOC-- even the crappy ones like Kansas, Purdue, Illinois, Syracuse and Vanderbilt.

I would imagine the buy for the Miami-oh game may be less since it is a long running game and is scheduled every year home and home. Saves UC from writing a bigger check for a similar program or an FCS program. Does anyone know if this is true?

I claim no inside information regarding these contracts but since Miami is a longstanding home and home arrangement, there may not be any "buy" involved. Each team keeps their home game ticket revenue each year. PBS may involve some split on tickets sold by UC through the ticket office since most years the attendance at PBS will far exceed a home game in Oxford and UC will be generating that incremental revenue because of proximity and stadium capacity.

I think a "buy" comes into play when UC is paying an FCS team to come play a single game here with no return game.

RE: It's GAME DAY: Week 2, UC @ Miami (Ohio)-- GAMETHREAD!
I know that the "Battle for the Victory Bell" has lost some of its luster, but for those of you who want to drop the Miami series, who do you want to replace it with?

A couple of reality points here:
-The "Keg'O'Nails" series is NOT coming back as anything more than a "one off" anytime in the future. Louisville has ended that rivalry and filled it in with the Commonwealth game with UK. Hate it. Cry over it. But that's the way it is, and barring our being in the same conference again some day, it's just not happening.
-You are not getting another "P5" school to sign onto any long-lasting series. I wish it could happen, but it's not. I'd love to "upgrade" Miami with another rivalry--Ohio State, Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, etc... But we may get 1-1's with some of these type of games (at best) but that's all that can happen. AND, let's be frank here, you don't have to drop the Miami game to get that to happen...you can drop the annual FCS game to add another P5 match-up...IF you can get it to happen.
- Which means replacing Miami with another g5 program...probably another MACie. And while I can see growing a rivalry with Ohio (in particular) or maybe Toledo, are you getting much more "bang" for your buck? And we have BOTH Miami and Ohio on the schedule this season.

I just don't see the value in dropping Miami unless you have something better. Dropping Miami for a "Western Kentucky" makes me throw up in my mouth. Dropping Miami for a "Bowling Green" just makes me yawn.

Now, dropping "Alabama A&M" or "Delaware State" for a Marshall or some such might make sense. But you don't flush your last long-running and organic rivalry game for yet another nobody.

On top of this, it is nice to have an away game that is a quick drive away. Now most fans don't even need to leave the city to see UC play an "away" game. The only reason people want this dropped is because Miami has not been able to become a player in the MAC. If they could even find BGSU levels of success it would probably change some opinions.

Jerry hit the nail on the head here. Why get rid of a long standing, close (in proximity) rivalry for another MAC/Sun Belt/ Conference USA game?

Isn't the "buy" also meant to offset transportation costs and to make it "worth their while" for the team coming? Miami is FBS, is local and is competitive. I think they'd rather do "buy" games with a lower tier SEC, ACC or B10 team than with their rival and (a program they consider) their peer. I think they'd give us the finger before taking a buy game from us. Just my opinion but I think they'd be offended.

Money before pride. No program wants to give up home games, especially not to another G5 school, but Miami would get over it for a couple of million dollars. But that's the real point. OSU and Michigan and Alabama etc., can afford to pay the big bucks to buy games. UC can't - we don't make enough from our other home game and tv to pay the kind of money even a G5 would want to sell a game. So we have to do trades and many teams, whether lower P5 or G5 will hold out for 1:1s.

RE: It's GAME DAY: Week 2, UC @ Miami (Ohio)-- GAMETHREAD!
I say keep the UC-Miami game. It's a natural long-time rivalry and it's a very winnable game for UC. Can't really go wrong in that scenario.

Back to some quick game thoughts and observations.

One thing that really stood out to me on Saturday during warm-ups was how impressive looking the freshman Defensive Linemen are. Physically those guys all look really good. Not only Vann but Martin and Sanders as well. Both of those guys look very well built, extremely athletic and Sanders in particular has an incredible frame.

As I mentioned in another post, they need to really open it up this week and throw the ball. Get some valuable experience for Ridder in the passing game as well as the WR's. I think the WR unit is going to be much improved this year. They were getting wide open the few times UC dropped back to throw on Saturday night. Lewis had an easy touchdown if Ridder doesn't underthrow the ball on the one bomb where Miami was called for PI. He had his guy beat by 5 yards. I'd like to see some read option stuff with Ridder where he actually drops back and throws it.

The secondary is so much more athletic. As I said last year, they had a couple guys on the field last year that just weren't fast enough or athletic enough to cover anyone and they were exploited all season. This year all the DB's are at least capable of competing from an athletic standpoint. So good to see.

Sure is. Tackling across the board so far has been great at all levels and we are blowing up people as well.
