Not sure what you mean by "Murfreesboro won't be caught."

Are you specifically talking about enrollment numbers? If so, it looks like their enrollment has been decreasing each year from 4 years ago.

MTSU Enrollment

2015 - 22,423
2016 - 21,971
2017 - 21,789
2018 - 21,766

Memphis Enrollment
2017-2018 - 21,301

I found the UofM number from 2 places. Forbes shows this number as 2017-2018 while the link posted simply shows 2018. So I'm not sure if this is the correct number for the current school year underway.

Regardless, we're looking at a difference of less than 500 students.

Now, it will take some time to catch UT at 28,052 (link).

Here's the link to the BOT meeting from earlier this week. Lots of good info and answers some of the enrollment and major projects questions brought up here.

While the new community health building look great, I would also like to see some more investment in the programs that are typically strong at schools with good academic reputations - Life/Physical Sciences, Information/Computer Science, Business/Econ, Engineering. Most of the buildings that support those programs are completely falling apart and neither the facilities nor the resources that support the curriculum are all that great. Eventually this needs to be addressed.

Reputation is overrated. You don't want Memphis to be Duke. You want Memphis to be an accessible 4-year public University for all of West TN to get a college education. The only other school like that anywhere close is UT-Martin, and a lot of people don't want to spend 4 years in Martin.

Yeah you are right, I have no interest in Memphis being Duke. More like Memphis/UTK being IU/Purdue. We aren't close to even that level right now.

However, would love for Memphis to become a "smaller Middle TN" just think of the jobs and companies that would follow!!!

I wasn't aware that the state supports UK students anymore than UofM students. Care to elaborate?

UTk gets far more state support than the UofM.

Not to mention, Southwest is completely getting destroyed by the funding formula.

That is not the same as saying that UTK students get more support from the state than Memphis students. As a matter of fact, if I have my facts straight, a $4000 Hope Scholly goes further at Memphis than it does at Bount. Then there is the "financial aid package" which is from the federal government, and has nothing to do with which school you attend.

- Memphis Community Health Building $60 million
- Student Recreation & Fitness Building $62 million (under construction)
- Cecil C. Humphreys move $41 million state funds + $2 million construction retrofit
- John S. Wilder Tower $3.6 million
- Parking garage $24 million
- Land bridge $18 million
- Centennial Place $53 million
- Fogelman College Of Business $800,000
- LB state of the art scoreboard $2.5 million
- LB sound system upgraded to not the world's crappiest
- LB, painted, general renovations $8 million
- LB $12 million, ADA compliant
- LB Tiger Lane $15 million
- LB chair backs $5 million
- FedEx Park $3 million
- Billy J. Murphy locker room, weight room $3 million
- Billy J. Murphy/IPF $30 million (out of $40 million)

Very impressive.

Yes impressive but not much of the things on that list will help the U of M rise to the top 500 school list.

A main problem is the Memphis economy is largely a service based economy. And there are not very many advanced degree studies for that type of industry.

More needs to be done with the Health Sciences. Would be fantastic if we could take over or at least become partners with UT at the med school.

Maybe more in music heritage as the Memphis area is birth place to two major forms of music.

Our business and Egyptology departments are well above average.

Memphis enrollment is currently 21,686 for the fall. Down about 100 from 2017.

MTSU has a larger number of undergrads while we have more grad students. Not sure how many grad students UTK has but my guess is it's a sizeable chunk of their 28k because MTSU typically claims they have the largest undergrad enrollment in the state.

Online and FedEx programs will probably help fund a lot of the other improvements that will impact our research designation and rankings.
