Us Southerners need to remember this the next time there's a snarky thread
about us panicking over a little snow.
http://www.foxnews.com/us/2018/09/06/sep...oning.html
Quote:It may be after Labor Day, but scorching temperatures across parts of the country are forcing schools to send students home or cancel classes all together because of buildings having no air conditioning.
Schools across New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Ohio are all taking action on Thursday due to excessive heat, canceling class as well as after-school activities.
In Ohio, dozens of school districts were forced to cancel classes for a third day in a row on Wednesday after temperatures reached well into the 90's.
Quote:In Philadelphia, schools will dismiss students at noon on Thursday due to excessive heat and cancel all after-school activities, including athletic programs and professional development sessions. Students were also sent home early from Philadelphia schools for three days last week, with officials saying high temperatures into the evening meant many buildings weren't cooling overnight, FOX29 reported.
Only 27 percent of the district's school buildings have central air conditioning.
Dozens of districts in New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York have also decided to close early on Thursday due to the sweltering temperatures.

It's not the kids they are worried about. It's the obese teachers. We didn't get a.c. in our class rooms until I was in the 6th grade and it was a window unit in the corner of the classroom that the school bought through fundraising. And I lived in southern mississippi.

It was 9th grade for me to finally get it in every class. Before that I had a class or two in portable classrooms that had a/c but the main school buildings didn't.

We had 5 schools that didn't have AC in our school district back in the '80's. By high school, we were down to one, but every school got off at 12:30 pm if the temp hit 98 before 11 am.
NC has perfect weather for a kid to get out of school. If it sleets or too much heat!

I stayed in Harrisonburg for summer session one year, no A/C even then.
Never had it in K-12 at all.

The only reason they cancel school in MN is if a blizzard (a f*cking blizzard, not the rest of the country's idea of some snow falling prettily in the background) is scheduled to hit during morning bus routes. There is also the now very rare "uh, the buses won't start this morning it's -23" but that has gone the way of the dodo as new buses are all natural gas, or left plugged in or even running all night.
Otherwise, get your ace to school and learn little snow kids. If you can get to school, you can get home from school. Here are pictures from last winter:

Yeah, when we got bored we would watch the wasps fly in and out of the windows. A hot day was when it rained and the windows were closed!
Although with your post the first image that popped into my mind was the wicked witch from the Wizard of Oz screaming, "I'm melting, I'm melting!"

I can remember one year it was really hot at the start of the school year. Some of the students were complaining about the heat so our teacher says "How many of you played outside this summer?" Everyone raised their hand so she says "So y'all should be used to the heat so stop complaining."

You'll get used to it. I walked home from school in an actual blizzard in '63 and have the frost bite to prove it. Sault Ste. Marie could get some weather. I take it you won't even be in the U.P. which means it won't be quite that bad.

I graduated HS in 1983. We got a new HS, and air conditioning, in January 1983. I think they turned it on maybe once before I graduated. Also, we were not allowed to where shorts to school in those days around here, so every day in jeans.
No one died.

I cannot remember one single time being sent home because it was too hot and we didn't have AC then either.

90s isn’t even hot. This has been a fairly mild summer imho in Alabama. I think 95-96 has been the highest reading thus far. We usually have a handful of days in the 100s every summer.

Agreed. Here in south mississippi we didn't even hit 100. Handful of days the heat index went over 100. But I remember a few years back we went 30 days straight with a temp of at least 100.

I never got early dismissals due to heat back when I was in K-12. That's really only been a thing here in Connecticut over the last 10 years or so.
And it wasn't that bad. Granted, I lived in Memphis for a few years so I have something to compare it to.
