RE: Sunbelt Marching Band Ranking
I prefer the drum and bugle corps style of band. As a former music major (not in the band) I wish StAte would put more money into our music program. At the same time, I wouldn't trade our band for any of yours. At the bowl parades we always get lots of compliments on our band each year. Plus, those guys are some of our most die hard student fans.

I used to be a pretty big DCI buff until George Hopkins ruined it. To the trained ear, most marching bands don’t come close to being as fine tuned as a drum Corp. That’s in both tuning and tone. Troy has easily the best marching band in the SBC in that regard. I haven’t heard J-States band in a few years, but back when a ton of their members were a part of Spirit, they were the best band in Alabama. Whether you’re a fan of high stepping or Corp style marching, one thing is certain...HBCU bands are generally unchallenged in stand tunes when the styles collide. Corp style bands usually have the better tone, intonation, and balance, but HBCUs have better stand tunes and other things that get the crowd and more importantly the football players excited. And dammit you can find some of the best screamers in America in some of the HBCUs, and they are amazing. I’m talking double Cs all day sitting on top of an already over the top brass section. That’s pure entertainment, which is what they want.

I like our band. They have worked on and found a good blend of quality and entertainment....in addition to being some of the best fans in the stands. Would not trade them.........but might do an occasional exchange with Alabama.

Jax State was never the best band in Alabama.
George Hopkins RUINED DCI, we agree on that.
By the way, Jax State is using a modern DCI-style soundtrack this year with singing.
It all depends on the arrangements the HBCU bands are playing. If it’s all just the same line in octaves, to hell with it. If ithere’s actually harmonies and counter melodies, they still better play it right. I like any style if it’s done right. I hate honking, splatting, and only one volume level. I’m not crazy about dancing in any band, but the nasty stripper moves can’t be tolerated. If the band members are going to dance, then by damn be together.
Most people have no idea how difficult it is to put a corps-style show together.
Entertainment is subjective. Some people like a show that’s technically demanding and has a musical theme that carries through to a strong finish. Some people only care about if they know the songs. Then there are Georgia Tech fans who only care about the fight song and the Budweiser theme. You can’t make them all happy.

Southern Rocks. I wish some of the better HBCU bands would come to Statesboro. Southern Pride would get destroyed though...I say this as a 4 year Southern Pride vet. For that to happen, we’d of course need to schedule an HBCU not named Savannah State or SCState...and to do that, we probably have to show some good will and stop having incidents where racial bs keeps happening aka throwing bottles at HBCU cheerleaders. Didn’t hear much from SCState a couple weeks ago, but they barely brought their football team and nothing else. The last HBCU that rolled into Athens produced a lot of good press and the people on their message boards were generally favorable towards it. I’d put money on a thread popping up on gsufans bitching and moaning about the other band.
Back when I was in the drumline we played Bethune Cookman in the playoffs. They brought their band and it was a good time. We even arced up after the game and had a drum off with their line. I think they outnumbered us 3-1. Two completely different styles but it was a good time.
Also what happened to the membership of southern pride? We used to be North of 240 members but now are around 160 or so.

To be fair, there are very few bands that Southern wouldn't embarrass in the stands.

Marching Bands cant play when the football is in play in College! Southern could have got a penalty.
Plus it very disrespectful to play over the other band. Wait until they get done before playing. It's kind of a Gentleman's agreement between band director not to play while other band is playing.
There is no hand holding when it comes to hbcu band battles. Also, never play Neck against Southern. That was a bad idea from the start.
