Be careful, this kind of talk will earn you a ban on this forum these days.

We haven't banned anyone since I've been a mod.

I didn't delete the comment. I just moved the original title to the comment area and made the thread title more accurate.

And do we really need new threads just for a joke? OPs post could have been easily added to the Liberty or FIU thread. At least now it's a thread worth continuing discussion.

Is it in the forum rules?

Yes. And as already noted, I didn't remove it. I just took it out of the thread title.

If that is indeed the case on every throw he makes then he has got to sit for someone else until he gets that taken care of. And I would think the coaches would have noticed that after all of this time. . . .

Not only is it questionable if his eyes are even closed on that throw, but if you google his name (out of curiosity), there are plenty of pictures with him throwing the ball with his eyes open.

Where the hell is our running game? LU is not Alabama, How could our RBs gain only 86 yards against a heretofore mediocre FCS defense???
Once again we have (all the signs were there last year) an anemic one dimensional rushing offense that looked pretty good only in 2016, due in large part to the skills of Ray Lawry.

C'mon.
The entire success of ODU football should NOT be the responsibility of one 18 yr old young man. He needs time to mature; emotionally, physically, and skillwise.

All things being as they should, Blake LaRussa should be our QB. At this point of a balanced FBS development, while not spectacular, we should have a ball control offense that can run and pass efficiently.
Right now we are back to where we were with TH, without TH. That is no way to construct a solid football program.

Bobby mentioned that SW was our starter in part, because he could run. At this point in our development we shouldn't have to rely on an escape artist to win games.
If he wants him to run, then install a dual threat offense and take advantage of that skill rather than use it for desperation.

I believe in the system concept. Develop a sound fundamental scheme and philosophy and drop players into it. Try your best to recruit players that fit the system.
When you get an exceptional player, Like a Lawry or TH, then you will excel. In the years you don't you are still competitive, if not a league champion. In the long term this will stabilize recruiting and reduce volatility in the fanbase.

The apparent haphazard feast or famine ODU philosophy cannot sustain this program.

What we saw last year was teams loaded the box because of Larussas inability to get the ball downfield (Williams has the arm strength too....but does he have the accuracy?) and inability to scramble/avoid sacks.

If Williams plays like he did from WKY to the end of the year (100-151 for 1,025 yards, 6.79 ypa, 200 rushing yards on 65 carries), he is the far better QB. If he plays like he did vs. Liberty, he most certainly is not.

There is plenty of upside If SW is not ready. Maybe he is even having a Sophomore slump.
BL is smart and as someone else said, BL can manage the offense and will not lose the game. ( I still want to see Drayton Arnold).

If the read option is the staple of our offense then it is not working.
In fact SW ran only three times in the first half, and one was a designed only run (4th & Goal at LIB 1(9:55 - 2nd) Steven Williams run for 1 yd for a TD)

As i said above, if our offensive success is completely dependent on one very young player, the we are not doing this correctly.
In any event, FIU is going to answer a lot of questions.

I completely agree. And the reality is if SW has a bad start, the crowd is going to insist there be a change. I hope the last game was a fluke and SW takes the reins.

Probably also notable that the pic was at age 17, on the road, in his first start, against the toughest opponent the program has played in its history.

But carry on. I remain hopeful for growth out of the 18 year old.

And I would hope Wilder wouldn't give in to the whim of the fans. I don't want us dictating strategy/personnel. If he wants to replace him because it's his decision, fine. But do it on his terms, not ours.

I think if SW plays poorly tomorrow, it is time to seriously consider giving him a redshirt season. I have been a fan of his since the beginning, and think he has the potential to be a very good qb for us, but he is still very young, and it would definitely benefit him to have an extra season.

Does the 4 game thing work after your first season?

The td was not a designed run per se. He kept the ball because the Defense crashed.

What does not losing the game mean? In theory Williams didnt “lose the game” because he didnt throw any picks? Or did he not win the game bc he missed throws?

Either way, we arent Bama/Georgia. We arent winning any games if our QB is playing “not to lose.” We dont have the running game or defense. We need the QB to make plays.

We need the QB to make the defense play honest. If they stack the box against the run, we need to beat them over the top. That didn't happen last week. But if he makes those throws, which I think he can, the running game gets bigger lanes and he gets more room to make plays with his feet.

SW needs to come out mad this weekend and put up some good numbers. I can handle a young QB making some poor decisions but he needs to have the right mechanics. He's not making throws to wide open receivers when he's not pressured. I'm sure he's got it and the coaches have seen it. We saw some of it last season. If not we've got to move down the depth chart.

FWIW, I thought the Aim High joke was funny. I need some humor in these times.

You do realize that there are RULES to redshirting right? If you have played a down this season and you aren’t a true freshman, you cannot redshirt.

Of course injuries could happen and a medical redshirt can be sought, but no not “anyone can redshirt”

Can you show me where it only applies to freshman? Nothing I've read says it only applies to freshman.

The 4 playing seasons in 5 years still applies.

He's a very limited QB and if he were to start at QB, if (BIG IF) it increased our chances of winning, it would be by the slimmest margins possibly. He is no threat to run which puts a damper on the read option that is a stable of our offense.

That was part of my original point.
That places a tremendous burden on one single player. As with Shuler Bentley, that burden is unfair and likely overwhelming in many respects.

Again, the larger question is why do we still have no running game (except 2016) and why do we still have an inadequate defense?
We cannot continue to have a team that depends so heavily on one position.
Taylor Heinicke is not coming back, but the offensive concept seems to require that level of skill at quarterback.
