THEC is the only way I would think they could worm their way into affecting it...well, that and any UT alumni hellbent on not approving a no-brainer for the western end of the state.

Approving what? Under what authority?
Under THEC's authority. THEC is over all higher ed in TN. This includes the UT system, TBR, and schools with independent boards like the UofM. UT probably has alumni in THEC.

Tennessee Higher Education Commission Members:
* Evan Cope- BS- Rhodes College- JD- University of Memphis- Represents Middle Tennessee
* Dr. Nancy Dishner- BS, MS, Eed- East Tennessee State- represents East Tennessee
* Jimmy Johnston- Can't find a bio anywhere; lives in Gallatin- Represents Middle Tennessee
* Pam Koban- BA- UT; she and her husband made a $250K gift to the UofM to endow a scholarship in honor of her sister, who was a professor here for 36 years. Represents Middle Tennessee
* Mintha Roach- BS- UT- represents East Tennessee
* Vernon Stafford Jr.- BS from Roger Williams University- EVP of Audit for First Horizon in Memphis- represents West Tennessee
* Frank L. Watson- JD from Tulane- represents West Tennessee
* AC Wharton- BA from TSU; JD from Ole Miss- Secretary of THEC and represents West Tennessee
* Dakasha Winton- BA from TSU; JD from University of Memphis- represents East Tennessee
* Tre Hargett- Secretary of State and Constitutional Officer of THEC- BA and MBA- University of Memphis
* Justin Wilson- Comptroller of State and Constitutional Officer of THEC- BA from Stanford and JD from Vanderbilt
* David Lillard- State Treasurer and Constitutional Officer of THEC- BA and JD- University of Memphis

It appears to me we are well represented on THEC.
That’s pretty impressive

5/12 are direct alums.
That doesn't count a former Mayor of the city or a former exec of 1st TN (+2). And then another rep of West TN (-1). So you'd think at least 8 of the 12 would be very fair to the U of M. Very cool.
