Civil Discourse & Kids
I will apologize for not knowing how to transfer Satchel Ziffer's tweet on the Liberty game to our message board but here is the link - https://twitter.com/SatchelZiffer. It is a POV that needs to be posted on our MB and that some of you might want to consider. He notes that, of course, our players know about this stuff (tweeter & message boards) and read it. Some of these players like Steven Williams are only 18 years old. Food for thought for those who have some measure of compassion/consideration for those who play the game.

Yup, thank you. The part about insulting or demeaning our players (18-22) is important. The other stuff is heartfelt and at least worth consideration. 04-cheers

This is a load of crap, I agree that personal attacks go to far but babying our team after a complete embarrassment of a game is pathetic. You don't see this at Tennessee, Michigan, Texas or any other big time program that is in a down year. This is about winning! That is it! Kids are expected to play well and get their degree. If they are not cut out for this then time to move on from them.

You think the people down at Florida State right now are happy? No they are calling for Taggert's job after one game.

Its time to grow up real fast! Fans don't attack kids personally but don't hold back when letting your concerns be known. If players at ODU read the message boards and see something they don't like after the most embarrassing loss in school history well that's too freaking bad! Go cry about it or go do something about it! I hope every single one reads my post.

I agree. They are welcome to read these posts, but damn if these posts affect them. That sounds really immature of them if they let the frustrations of internet posts get to them. They signed up for this when they decided to play at an FBS school or any school with high visibility or an engaged fanbase. Grow the hell up, or don't come to these boards. Pretty simple.

I will say none of us better be tweeting at the kids, that's just a line that should never be crossed. However, they grew up with the internet and they typically can handle internet trolls better than anyone here can.

That is a horrible tweet. Wilder gets paid a lot of money to coach and be a leader of a program. Fans/donors spend a lot of their time and money supporting that very program. If you can't handle it, then this probably isn't the job for you. Nobody has attacked a single kid, on a personal level. If you can't be critiqued, stay off the field. Bobby Wilder sacrificing his time? What a joke!

Edit: So at one point we are begging students and fans to show up and be really passionate about the program. Now we are asking them to tone it down a little. Can't have it both ways buddy.

Everything about this program from the AD and coaches down to the PLAYERS is pretty pathetic. As I have said in the past we are FBS in classification only. Excuse making coach and crybaby players, it’s gonna be a great year. Aim for the tissue box after your next pounding... “kids”

BTW I hate when BW calls them kids. These are Division 1 FBS college football players, not kids. If they cant handle criticism after a football game they are all going to have a pretty tough life

IDK, if coaches or player come here after a bad loss they should know what to expect. Facebook and Twitter are more public forums I'd say. Is it a personal attack to say SW can't hit the broad side of a barn? I'm sure he's a nice guy and if he's young maybe he should redshirt but he's not getting it done right now.

First, Wilder and the players should stay far away from this message board at all times, and probably, away from social media during the season. But, if he's not going to avoid them, he needs to have tougher skin and deal with the criticism. When you are the Head Football Coach and command the salary of one, you need to have some thick skin. With that said, the only opinion Wilder should care about is that of his boss.

The stuff I read on here after a game like Saturday is over the top. Maybe some of you have miserable lives and feel the need to take it out on Wilder and the team. That's your prerogative. I just don't see what is gained by it.

Signing back off for now.

If you’re looking to a sports messageboard for content in which you’ll always “gain from” then I am afraid you may be looking to make your gains in the wrong place.

Not much of anything is gained by any of us from this place existing at all, happy posts or **** posts. Ultimately this is just an argument board and Odu sports are the topic

So you just run and hide in a hole when things get bad and others voice their opinions on this board. I personally have not seen anything over the top and if I did I would call that person out. But there is nothing on here that you wouldnt see on any other board across the country so just grow up and toughen up a little bit.

You think we have miserable lives because we care about our school and team and demand that they put out a better performance? or we are just somehow picking on kids and coaches that dont deserve it? What is this, a freaking beauty pageant?

People are just to damn sensitive sometimes.

I disagree with this whole premise. These coaches and players need some thicker skin. Outside of personal insults directed at individual players, everyone associated with that terrible, embarrassing game needs to hear what people really think about it. The last thing they need is a pat on the back.

And the part about "one game doesn't make a whole season" or whatever the exact quote is - we've gotten our butts handed to us multiple times a season for every season we've been in FBS. Most times it was against teams we probably didn't have a chance to begin with, but this time it was truly embarrassing and the coaches need to feel the heat.

If you don't get anything out of the board, you're likely unwilling to see value in different perspectives. That's why I come here. I'm not here to argue. I'm here to share and gleen information and see the program from others' viewpoints.

One of our players was called trash and garbage I saw it even if you did not. A post surprisingly removed by one of or non moderating moderators. That is what prompted me to start this thread. I understand frustration and complaining and was also not happy with our performance Saturday. (I think it was even worse in person) But what some on here say does go over the top. How about this - if you want to get really insulting and nasty about players or coaches do it in person. Man up and go call him that to his face - off campus. If you would not do that, don't bravely, anonymously, post it on here.

RE: Civil Discourse & Kids
We actually get perspective from a former college football player and fans want to completely disregard it.

I don't think anyone cares if your intelligently criticize. The problem comes when you are ignorant and have no idea what you are talking about. There was a guy on here that called for Wilder to get fired because he didn't blitz the middle linebacker against Georgia Southern :) (for example)

Wilder deserves criticism for his coaching on Saturday night. If you don't think he's the man for the job, that's your opinion. Posting signs in the neighborhood is embarrassing. Attacking him personally is embarrassing. He takes on 100 kids every year (many that have nothing in their life) and molds them into educated young men. If you've met many of the kids on the team (or that have gone through the program), the large majority of them are fine young men. Obviously, that is only have of Wilders job so his on field performance matters even more.

I don't even think anyone cares if you criticize the play of individual players (I know I do it). That is understandable. What I believe Satchel is referring to is the personal insults at 17-22 year olds. Some of it on here, but ALOT on Twitter. Just because they can play football means they aren't kids? 22 year olds have a different maturity of level than 18 year olds. And just because you can join the military at 18 doesn't make you mature either.

Avoiding personal insults at 19 year old kids does not mean you are babying them. When you were 19 did you have 50 year old adults calling you stupid?

Trash? Garbage? Are you serious man? What the hell do you think the hear on the field from the other team or other fans? What do you think people at FSU, Michigan and Tennessee are calling their players right now? I dont say anything about the player because I think this is all on the coaches but if I say BW is trash or a trash coach you think that is over the top? What is this world coming to you.

Yes you are too damn sensitive if you cant handle some criticism with the most minor of name calling!

Is calling Wilder a trash coach a personal insult? I wouldn't consider it. Just like if I said you were a ****** garbage man (or whatever profession)....

How about this - if you want to get really insulting and nasty about players or coaches do it in person. Man up and go call him that to his face - off campus. If you would not do that, don't bravely, anonymously, post it on here.

Trash?

So if FSU does it, it makes it right? Hey, if they can be imbeciles, why can't we?

Is calling Wilder a trash coach a personal insult? I wouldn't consider it. Just like if I said you were a ****** garbage man (or whatever profession)....

Point is this is football. If you don't win, fans get upset. If you get embarrassed by an FCS transition team after 8 months to prepare, fans are going to criticize and name call and players/coaches better just shut up and take it.
