You think we have miserable lives because we care about our school and team and demand that they put out a better performance? or we are just somehow picking on kids and coaches that dont deserve it? What is this, a freaking beauty pageant?

People are just to damn sensitive sometimes.
One of our players was called trash and garbage I saw it even if you did not. A post surprisingly removed by one of or non moderating moderators. That is what prompted me to start this thread. I understand frustration and complaining and was also not happy with our performance Saturday. (I think it was even worse in person) But what some on here say does go over the top. How about this - if you want to get really insulting and nasty about players or coaches do it in person. Man up and go call him that to his face - off campus. If you would not do that, don't bravely, anonymously, post it on here.

Trash? Garbage? Are you serious man? What the hell do you think the hear on the field from the other team or other fans? What do you think people at FSU, Michigan and Tennessee are calling their players right now? I dont say anything about the player because I think this is all on the coaches but if I say BW is trash or a trash coach you think that is over the top? What is this world coming to you.

Yes you are too damn sensitive if you cant handle some criticism with the most minor of name calling!

So if FSU does it, it makes it right? Hey, if they can be imbeciles, why can't we?

Is calling Wilder a trash coach a personal insult? I wouldn't consider it. Just like if I said you were a ****** garbage man (or whatever profession)....

Point is this is football. If you don't win, fans get upset. If you get embarrassed by an FCS transition team after 8 months to prepare, fans are going to criticize and name call and players/coaches better just shut up and take it.

No one cares if fans get upset or not. Instead of saying insults, maybe they should consider why they are middle aged people slinging insults at 18 year olds. Ah, but its FOOTBALL!

RE: Civil Discourse & Kids
There's a difference between constructive criticism (warranted) and name-calling (unwarranted). Is there a reason for grown adults to call an 18-year old "trash" instead of simply pointing out which parts of the game they're lacking in, what they can improve on, or who could replace them?

I don't have children, but I don't think I'd call them "garbage" when they're playing sports (or learning anything in life).

Also I kinda get the point that they need to have thicker skin - especially for away games - but it still doesn't warrant attacks. We're adults and we should hold ourselves to higher standards than people barely out of high school. I said awful things as a student that I wouldn't now.

Again, look at the facts of the game and what happened. Stop arguing because your feelings are hurt. No one that I have seen has called a player a name beyond the word trash and garbage as mentioned by ETSU. But anything aimed at the coaches they should just sit back and take it.

I guess you are not tired yet of getting blown out and embarrassed like I am.

My feeling aren't hurt at all. I'm pointing out that personal insults on players or coaches is an embarrassment to our fanbase and trying to explain how wrong it is for a mid aged person to sling personal insults while they eat cheetos on their couch.

Obviously, if you haven't seen it (which many have, including Satchel), then you are either self conscious or think it's fine for adults to sling insults at college kids. Do I like when ODU gets blown out? Obviously not and it makes me upset. If I am that angry, I don't see what benefit I have in posting anything online so I just get off the internet and do something else. Do you think players will try harder or play better if you call them trash or stupid? Or is it just a mechanism for an adult to feel better about themselves?

I would argue that if you are that upset over a collegiate sporting event, maybe you should re-evaluate your priorities in life. I'm not sure why I would personally feel embarrassed, I didn't contribute to the loss by the football team. If you feel that badly about a loss by your sports team, how badly do you act when you lose at something you actually participate in?

Could not agree more. The best effect coming from all this online vitriol is fodder and laughs for fanbases like JMU (who still try to justify playing low level opponents) and VCU (who would say that our move to football was a mistake). If that makes you a proud ODU alumnus, have at it.

Just because some of us don't post every bit of our anger online doesn't mean that we are passive on winning or progress. I post anger and disappointment like anyone else, but I still think about the audience and intended outcomes. And I fully understand why CoachODU exited stage left right after the game. I took a couple of days off as well but was drawn back by Satchel Ziffer's tweet when I was catching up this morning.

I happen to be one that would say it to Bobby or Wood's face before I'd say it to the world while hiding behind my keyboard. That's just who I am. And what we are seeing 3 days after the game says more about the poster than the "so-called" subjects of the post itself.

RE: Civil Discourse & Kids
I played a college sport at a very high level. Insults were thrown my way all the time by people at my school and by fans or donors. I was once labeled as the team's biggest disappointment in my sophomore season. I saw/heard all of this stuff without even looking for it. It didn't bother me at all. I realized that when you have haters, you also have fans. Having fans that are passionate, is totally worth the insults. If Coach Wilder is soft enough to worry about people bashing him for getting blown out by Liberty, he should do himself a favor, and get out of the coaching profession.

What kind of fan are you? You dont feel any embarrassment after that loss? I really guess you dont care as much as some other people. People get angry and post because they are tired of watching the same old crap and want BW gone. Its just not acceptable and needs to change. Can you tell me one game that we have been competitive in against a team that we were most likely to lost against, just one? Im not even talking about beating that team but just being competitive for 60 minutes. Sure we have beaten some crappy teams but we are constantly getting blown out. Maybe not you but there a lot of ODU fans out there that are tired of it.

With that said, the only opinion Wilder should care about is that of his boss.

The stuff I read on here after a game like Saturday is over the top. Maybe some of you have miserable lives and feel the need to take it out on Wilder and the team. That's your prerogative. I just don't see what is gained by it.

Signing back off for now.

We moderators do not, indeed can not, scrutinize every post. The post was reported, I looked at it and determined that it violated the AUP and deleted it.
I am not sure why that is surprising.

Further, moderation issues should not be addresses in public forum, as per the AUP and a such a swipe at the moderators is uncalled for. Some might even say it is a personal jab?

How does posting because you are tired of watching the same old crap and want BW gone help anything? What does it accomplish? Do you think Wood Selig is going to fire BW because a dozen fans post how angry they are on a message board? If you are that upset, come up with a reasonable position and call Wood Selig....or John Broderick.

Im not sure fan behavior has to do with beating teams we should not beat? It's been posted on here several times, but the games where we have won or competitive where we were projected to lose (off the top of my end) were FIU, Western Kentucky, North Texas (last year), Rice/LT/Pitt/ECU(Heinicke), UTSA (2016)

Actually I am very TIRED too, been to every single away P-5 game except Vanderbilt. That includes the UNC nightmare. All were losses , most bad (at least by the end) and with all of that background I would agree the loss Saturday was the absolute worst ever for ODU football. However, "I" was not embarrassed, as I did not play or coach in the game. If I say so myself, and I am, I did a great job as a fan at the game. "My" feelings were not hurt either as I was again, not on the field. I too am concerned "if" Coach Wilder is getting the job done now that we moved up. I also am not sure if he is not. This Saturday will settle a lot in my mind on that score. I did play college football (mostly on the bench) and I have heard insults from fans. *(thank goodness no social media back then.) I heard a lot more as a coach (30+ years). Mostly the worst insults came from folks who have never been through a two-a-day in August (now it starts in July) or played in a game. Alas, these folks always know the most about football and coaching. All that said I still see no reason to hurl personal insults at our players (who are kids, given my age) and although less an issue at the coaches either. FWIW - The general rules on this topic, as posted in the AUP are as follows: Any personal attack on other posters, school administration, and/or student athletes is subject to immediate removal without notice at the discretion of mods and admins. 07-coffee3

He's a fan. Period. A fan that will be a fan win or lose. As will I. I'll never burn my season ticket or apparel. I'll be there Saturday. Am I bummed? You betcha. But by next game I'll have mostly moved on and be there to hopefully cheer on a win.

It really upsets me when I see someone question another persons fandom because they don't get as riled up as they do. Really? How arrogant and self-absorbed must one be that you believe your way of showing fandom is the only and right way to do so?

RE: Civil Discourse & Kids
I'm not one to make my displeasure personal, but man, these guys are soft! I was 22 years old when my DI, Gunny Walker, told me to "Eat a bag of xhit and die." Funny, I didn't need to go to the base shrink for some counseling. I understood that I screwed up and that Gunny Walker wouldn't accept that. I had to be better.

ODU mailed it in on Saturday and it was a shameful performance. They should be embarrassed. Heck, they should be ashamed. That's what motivates people to get better.

Sorry, Bobby. If you want your "kids" to become men, you need to treat them like men. Don't make it personal, but don't treat them like babies. They aren't babies. Praise them when they earn it. Criticize them when they deserve it. Set a standard of behavior and performance and stick to it...including for yourself and your staff. You would be surprised on many would respond.

BTW, count me in the camp that is ready to take this program in a new direction. This staff is not ready for prime time. I truly believe their ceiling is FCS.

What kind of fan are you? You dont feel any embarrassment after that loss? I really guess you dont care as much as some other people. People get angry and post because they are tired of watching the same old crap and want BW gone. Its just not acceptable and needs to change. Can you tell me one game that we have been competitive in against a team that we were most likely to lost against, just one? Im not even talking about beating that team but just being competitive for 60 minutes. Sure we have beaten some crappy teams but we are constantly getting blown out. Maybe not you but there a lot of ODU fans out there that are tired of it.

Of those game how many have you been proud of, I mean really proud. We have never beaten anyone. BW has failed every time we play anyone worth something. There have been some games here and there that may have been close but I dont count beating FIU, UTSA or Rice meaning anything.

Agreed, Its time for a change.

Im proud of every win. But, that is not the point of the thread so I will bow out of that talk. The point is fan behaviour.

By the way, if you're not following Adam Winkler on Twitter, correct that immediately.

RE: Civil Discourse & Kids
Like I said earlier, Twitter and Facebook are more public forums and people should be aware of that. Venting here is IMO a different animal, people have to make an effort to come here to listen to our bitching. I wouldn't expect coaches or players to do that and we are fortunate to have a member of our administration (JCHandler) that does to keep a finger on the pulse so to speak. I'm not going to go on the ODU Football FB page and ***** and moan nor would I call anybody a name for not playing a game good enough. But calling for coaches to be fired and players to be benched and screaming in all caps "WTH WAS THAT?!?!?" at bad plays is a large part of what these message boards are for.

I think thats reasonable. Just admit what it is, an avenue to make yourself feel better; not a productive form of communication.

He really is man. Somewhere around the country, a coach is receiving threats from fans. Is that right to do? No. This shows how truly FCS, BW is.
