Whether they are A5 is not subjective, it's an empirical fact that BYU is not in the Autonomy group.

They are also no in the Group of 5 ... they are not in the running for the one Go5 spot in an Access Bowl, and do not participate in the Go5's complicated distribution of a single CFP share.

So the OP question, the answer, "are they A5 or G5" is "No".
