Very Good, Good and Bad in CUSA week 1
Old Dominion: Was taken to the woodshed by first year FBS member Liberty 52-10! Allowed 591 yards total offense to the Flames. Grade Bad

UAB: beat a bad Savannah State team 52-0 had 548 total yards in the process! Good teams are suppose to dominate bad teams. Grade Good

Louisiana Tech: Beat an FBS opponent in South Alabama 30-26. The Bulldogs defense forced 5 turnovers. Grade Good

Florida International : The Panthers dropped their season opener to Big 10 member Indiana by 10 in a 38-28 loss. Props to the Panthers for keeping it respectable after getting down 28-14. Grade Good

Florida Atlantic: The Owls lost Big to national power Oklahoma. Down 42-0 at halftime the Owls defense finished the game by given up 650 total yards. However I think with this game Florida Atlantic will still be a force to be recognized with in Conference USA. But the lack of competitiveness in this game leads to this Grade Bad

UTEP: Played host to FCS Northern Ariozna and were held to 229 yards of total offense. This team is awful and after Saturdays performance will look to continue their losing streak against UNLV. Grade Bad

North Texas: The Mean Green beat American Conference rival SMU handily 46-23. Mason Fine threw for over 400 yards. The Mean Green defense held SMU to only 4 yards rushing! Grade Very Good

Rice: The Owls played a very respectable first half against the University of Houston taken a 24-17. But then came the 2nd half in which saw them outscored 28-3. The Owls missed 3 field goal attempts and finish with.. Grade Bad

Charlotte: The 49ers struggled early against FCS squad Fordham taken only a 13-7 lead into halftime. However they came back in the 2nd half and established themselves to hold onto a 34-10 win and in doing so held Fordham's rushing attack to -9 rushing yards. Grade Good

Southern Miss: The Eagles beat a bad Jackson State team 55-7. That's exactly what Southern Miss was expected to do. The Nasty Bunch held the Tigers to only 219 total yards and forced 4 turnovers. However the Eagles turned the ball over 3 times and will struggle if they do that against good teams. Grade Good

Marshall: The Thundering Herd be a decent Mid-American Conference Miami team 28-21. The Herd gave up 444 total yards to a Miami team that struggled to move the ball last season. But a win is a win and that's exactly what the Herd was able to hang on to do. Grade Good

Western Kentucky: The Hilltoppers went into Madison Wisconsin with an upset on their mind. And put up a respectable 305 yards of offense against a great Badger defense. If there has ever been such a thing as a positive blowout this was it. Grade Good

Middle Tennessee State: The Blue Raiders came into the season as one of the preseason favorites in CUSA east. Their powerful offense was held below 300 yards of total offense by a tough Vanderbilt defense in a 35 - 7 loss Grade Bad

Texas - San Antonio: UTSA was crushed in a week 1 matchup against Arizona State 49-7 whom is lead by former NFL head coach Herm Edwards. The road runners who are known for their powerful running game was held to only 2 total yards of rushing offense. Grade Bad

Question. How is a Rice loss where they put up over 400 yards offense and had the lead against UH going into the 3rd Quarter with a chance to stay close or even win if we convert our field goals a 'Grade Bad'?

Even thru my Blue Colored Glasses, I'm ranking the Truly Awful group as follows:

1. MTSU
2. ODU
3. UTSA
4. FAU
5. UTEP
6. Western
Everybody else in CUSA actually played pretty dang decent from my viewpoint.

I can accept the "bad" for the second half, but we should get a "very good" for the first half. What does that average to?

I don't know specifically, but that pattern got me to graduation.

I only had two "good" first halves, so you are an academic star compared to me.

RE: Very Good, Good and Bad in CUSA week 1
I saw most of the Rice/Houston battle before traveling over to West End for the Commodore Humiliation. I thought Rice looked very good during the first half offensively, but they were a little porous on Defense. That's why I did not place them in my Bad category. But, in the Second half, I think the Owls looked a little worn down. On the other hand Rice (unlike MT) did not totally collapse in the second half.
