P6 Charade is Over
Although they have no extra access to the playoff or New Year's 6 bowl games, the AAC has been trying to promote their conference as the 6th power conference for a while now. But, in Week 1 of the college football season, some of their programs really didn't look the part. North Texas completely dominated an SMU team that won 7 games, finished tied for 3rd the AAC West, and went bowling in 2017. ECU lost to FCS program NC A&T at home. Temple, another AAC bowl team from 2017, also lost to an FCS program; losing to Villanova at home.
It is time to drop the P6 delusion.

They never will. Not as long as they keep producing NFL superstars like Paxton Lynch.

You could point out stinkers let by the Big 12 and Pac12, but that would not fit the narrative.

They aren't trying to prove their worth though. You can add Big 10 to your list too.

I hear more about the P6 moniker from fans of CUSA teams than AAC teams.

You don't see members of the AAC drawing over 80K like the blue bloods in the Big 12 and Pac-12, nor are they flagship universities with football budgets that are probably larger than the GDP of small islands. Those conferences are defined by the likes of Oklahoma and USC, not KU and Oregon State.

Every conf. has bottom feeders. It appears the AAC has their fair share. But, conference are judged based on their top teams, and UCF, USF, Memphis, Houston, and possibly now Cincinnati are all top quality teams capable of beating anyone.

lol...that 2017 Chad Morris coached "7 win" SMU team destroyed the CUSA western division champs (N Texas) 54-32. This years 2018 SMU team, sans Morris and 2 NFL caliber wide outs, probably isnt winning 7 games this year. I'm sure they will get better as the season progress's and the new system becomes more familiar---but I suspect its going to be tough year for the Ponies.
ECU will be horrible this year. Temple was 7-6 last year and beat Nova by 3. This year they lose to Nova by 2. Not much difference really. They will likely rebound to be pedestrian this year. On the up side, Cinci was 4-8 last year and looks to be much improved. Navy looked much better in the second half vs Hawaii--so Navy will likely be fine. UCF, Memphis, Houston, USF, Navy, and Cinci will be carrying the league this year. The other half will probably be average to poor---pretty much like any other league. The key to perception is the top of the league---not the bottom.
FWIW--I think Seth Lettrell might be the best G5 coach in Texas right now. Im very impressed with what he has accomplished there.

Delusions of grandeur lead to disappointment.
Also, Cincy proved nothing beating UCLA, which is going to be a bottom feeder this year.

Tulsa struggled against Central Arkansas as well. Central Arkansas will break out soon and beat Tulsa or other AAC schools.

I don't think SMU is bad. They had a decent defense and Jones is a good back. There O-line is big and strong. NT's D-line just looks to be much better this year. Hicks isn't a good QB, but if someone can win the job from him, SMU could be a bowl team.
Houston had trouble with a really bad Rice team in the first half of the game on Saturday. I'm really looking forward to our game in 2019. I hope we still have Littrell when that game comes around.

The top tier of the AAC are usually among the best quality teams in the nation, I won't disagree on that point. But none of them are at the level of blue bloods in terms of budget, attendance, flagship status, intangible prestige, etc; the bottom tier for the most part is below the bottom tier of other P5 conferences with some exceptions. UCF is perhaps the greatest G5 program today, but no one in their right mind would think they're on par with Notre Dame, Alabama, etc.

The AAC has the co-national champs, as recognized by the NCAA. Discussion over.

Playing the weakest schedule for a so called NC since the 1984 BYU team.

That is not recognized by the NCAA....that is only recognized by UCF and AAC fans.
