I did think that was ridiculous but from a fans perspective it was a historic day for us being our first FBS game and win after so many people told us we’d never move up. Now if they continue rushing the field every game which wouldn’t surprise me unfortunately than we deserve all the disparaging and negativity that would bring!

Rushing the field after beating Old Dominion? We should consider that a huge complement.

As I stated above it was more about the FBS first than who the opponent was. However, our fan base has a history of rushing the field for stupid thugs like beating Indiana state on a blocked field goal last season. Sort of embarrassing but seems to be a “tradition” our students have adopted. But hey if that keeps them at the game for 4 quarters I’ll take it

Meh, I've never wanted anything to do with Liberty before and sure don't want to see ODU playing them in the future.
Nothing to do with the butt whooping they gave ODU's team,.. Liberty is just gross to me.

RE: Rivalry?
Folks really? After kicking our arse, this polite Liberty fan came on to ask about the potential for a rivalry between two FBS schools in close proximity and some of our fans take this moment to take some political/religious stance. Can I (we) not have one place (sports) where we don't have to make everything political?

So you wouldn't be ok with playing Liberty because Fallwell's privately funded (asking nothing of you) university has beliefs you don't agree with? You won't play Liberty but bet for darn certain you have no problem scheduling a game against some of these big football factories where some of their stars are practically illiterate, don't go to class, steal, cheat and make a mockery of higher education. That you're ok with. hmmmm.

I will also say this. I used to have to travel to Lynchburg quite a bit to a satellite work location. I worked alongside many alumni from Liberty. They were some of the finest people I have ever met in my life... very well educated, kind and possessed strong work ethics.

Liberty is a well funded school and is going places. I think a rivalry with them would be great.

Regardless, let's separate sports from this other shite. There are millions of sites where political/religious opinions are wanted.

RE: Rivalry?
Those 4 non conference games are what I look forward to the most. Adding Liberty would waste an opportunity to enhance our schedule with an established G5. I prefer a good MWC, MAC or AAC team over Liberty.

Playing 2 times in 6 years does not make a rivalry, regardless of score or record. It's quite simply not enough history in my opinion. We won't be playing every year either. I'd rather build a rivalry with a team that we will face every year, like Charlottte, or wait for JMU to finally make their move, if that ever happens.

I wish we were playing them next year. We need to beat these people for redemption.

Excellent, that sentiment is where rivalries begin. 04-cheers

RE: Rivalry?
Establishing a rivalry with Liberty would really require playing them every year, thus taking up 1/4 of the non-conference games. That would reduce variety in the non-conference schedule. But given the travel costs in C-USA, ODU might like one guaranteed road game every other year in-state. But the schedule is probably filled out for the next few years, so establishing annual games might have to wait until the mid-20s. That's also when the current GoR expires. So by then, we may be in the same conference with Liberty anyway. So maybe a rivalry with LU is inevitable.

ODU is @ Liberty again 9/18/2021 and then Liberty visits ODU on 9/24/2022.

The non-conf schedule is pretty open after 2022 other than the VT contract that goes through 2031.

For me and Liberty.. yes. As to your other point, I never claimed I was fine with the "football factory" set up other schools have going on.

JMU or UNCC would be much better rivals IMO.

As for keeping politics out of it, I find it difficult to do so. Liberty is very political in just about everything they do, it's part of who they are.

The thought that anyone would call them privately funded is hilarious.

So as a Christian you have zero interest in spreading the gospel of Christ? Interesting to say the least.

Liberty Online's misleading sales tactics as well as their lack of investment in providing the best education possible for their online students are evidence Falwell Jr has put the dollar ahead of the message. He's a grifter. And as a Christian, I cannot support that.

Interesting read. I did my own research on Jerry Falwell U and was equally disappointed. Their current president has certainly mixed religion and politics beyond what I consider is acceptable (he is not shy on twitter). I was initially interested in a rivalry, but I can see why CUSA turned down their money to buy their way into the conference.
