USM upgrades campus roads, dining facilities
Work causes some roads to be closed

By Janet Braswell
American Senior Writer

Closed streets and parking lots may greet University of Southern Mississippi students when they return to campus for the Aug. 23 start of classes.

But the closures will be temporary as crews work their way through a yearlong repair and paving project on the southern side of campus, said Rusty Postlewate, physical plant director.

USM is spending about $500,000 on the resurfacing.

"We're working with the school schedule and especially the police department about closings," he said. "It's a really good relationship."

The most disruption will come when the contractor reroutes Southern Drive to eliminate a dog-leg near Arthell Kelly Hall and North 31st Avenue. The 60- to 90-day project may be delayed until the start of the Christmas break to minimize problems, he said.

But portions of the northern part of campus will be torn up to build a pedestrian/bicycle path along West Fourth Street, Sunset Drive and Montague Boulevard.

"This place is going to be so ugly because of these things," Postlewate said.

Work on the $1.2 million path - 11 feet wide and marked for pedestrians and cyclists - will begin this month.

As crews begin work on the path, others will be finishing renovation of most of the campus dining facilities.

Seymour's Grill in the University Union closed last week for a complete overhaul that will bring in Chick-Fil-A Express, Grill Works, Montague's Deli, Bene Pizza, Java City Coffee and Espresso and Freshens Smoothies.

Our roads used to be really good, but now they suck. Don't worry, they'll be back to being good soon!

That should sound familiar to ECU football fans!
