And Memphis.

per the public records request memphis only scans 54% of what they announce as sold so no

Per that piece of birdcage liner you got this info from. I know because I'm there every home game.

convincing evidence but im going to side with the numbers that memphis gave themselves to the reporter.

Correct. These numbers may or may not be correct, but they were the numbers that the SCHOOLS PROVIDED to the WSJ. If the schools knew they were wrong, why didn't they try to fluff up the numbers or give them the correct numbers. These are the numbers directly from the schools. If they thought they were wrong, they would offer up some type of excuse (as some actually did).

I dont know if I am special or not, but I walk into the Liberty Bowl at least half the time without my ticket being scanned. The scrum at the gates with security is such a cluster**** that I sometimes I just show them my ticket without it being scanned.

That seems odd. Every game I have ever gone to, I have had my ticket scanned before entering stadium.

See, you have to understand that there are MANY people inside the stadium that did not get their ticket scanned. All the band students? Not one of them gets scanned. Then there is the incompetence of the SUB-CONTRACTED stadium staff who DO NOT CARE about their job being done correctly. See, we are in a municipal stadium. We suffer from not being about to control certain aspects of gameday. But I can assure you. If we report a crowd of 45,000 this Saturday, you can bet the house that's pretty close to being accurate. The number of tickets scanned is a hard number. But it is not the truth.

how can it be accurate if they aren't scanning tickets? Isn't it an estimate at that point? Im sure Memphis is closer to actual than 54% but for years we've been hearing that Memphis only announces actual butts in seats but now we know thats not true, and perhaps pretty far from the truth.

Here's one that will really blow your mind. Back 10 or 15 years ago when they would actually tear ticket stubs, the way the Liberty Bowl staff thought it best to count attendance was to take all the stubs in 5 gallon buckets back to the office after the first quarter and WEIGH THEM. They had figured out that so many thousand ticket stubs weighed "X", and they calculated it from there...

LOL. Deniers. Despite the fact that THE SCHOOLS THEMSELVES PROVIDED THE DATA FOR THIS REPORT via open records requests.

Why would the schools lie about themselves to make them look worse that they really were? Think about it. If anything they would lie in the upward direction, so that the real numbers are even worse.

More laughable numbers. In 5 home games ULM drew a TOTAL of 13k actual fans (out of around 50K announced).

Well, Memphis only counts people in stadium and all tickets are scanned. It is laughable to think one would be able to get into any stadium without being checked and scanned.

The hurricane game was brutal ,and we could have claimed tickets sold which was the amount of season tickets we sold last year. Our athletic director, however, feels it is more representative to claim attendance. Oh and btw, we are close to 25k season ticket this year. Last year was closer to 20k sold. Walk up crowd to a “Mercer” type opponent will probably be 15,000 to 20,000

This isnt a college football problem either, this is every sport in the country. Orlando city announced 25K to a game earlier this year -- I was there and there was probably 15K max.

Actually, if you read the article, they listed the top 10 culprits in inflating announced numbers and USF was NOT among them. Sorry for you to hear.

sorry if I hurt your feelings my point was all schools announce paid/distributed, not butts in seats.

That's not true. Memphis reports turnstile count plus students, the band and others who work at the game. Switched over from paid/distributed a few years ago.

I know it's still in effect, b/c last year we had a monsoon in the opener, after selling about 22,000 season tickets. Announced attendance was 10,000-something.

Yep. I think this is then best policy and is the reason they call it attendance and not tickets sold.

Drawing 57% of Doak's capacity would mean that they had 45,000 fans per game and from games I saw last year, that's simply not the case. They had lots of empty seats for sure but not 35,000 empties a game.

When I was at FSU, I was responsible for reporting attendance for all olympic sports. I was told to essentially guesstimate rather than count. If it was pretty obviously a handful, it wasn't a big deal, but I'm not going to stand there and count 600+ people.

At Tulsa we usually actually counted for olympics. It’s really not that hard when you have multiple people working the Athletic Media booths.

ok how do you explain the massive difference between tickets scanned and tickets announced?

Not sure why memphis fans think their school is any different than anyone else? They obviously don't report butts in seats as per their own administrtation

I posted this last week. Again, my tickets were not scanned.
