Honestly, Larry Coker was pretty good. He ended up an .800 coach (60-15) with only 1 sub-9 win season in 6 years. Firing Coker sucked Miami into the never ending cycle of switching coaches every few years to get back what Coker had.

Coker deserved a better second opportunity than a start-up program.

Yeah, that firing goes in the "Be careful what you wish for" category along with Nebraska firing Frank Solich.

imagine if Rutgers impossibly upsets Ohio State in a few weeks. It would have gone full circle 150 years later LOL.

Ohio State defended the lineal championship against Nebraska. Next Ohio State defends the lineal championship against Michigan State. Ohio State and Michigan State have met 5 time for the lineal championship and Ohio State won all 5 and the current reign by Ohio State started by winning the lineal championship from Michigan State last season:

<2> Ohio State,25,vs,<16> Michigan State,20,Nov 2 1968
<1> Ohio State,54,vs,<19> Michigan State,21,Oct 11 1969
<12> Ohio State,31,@,Michigan State,10,Sep 18 1982
<1> Ohio State,38,@,Michigan State,7,Oct 14 2006
<8> Ohio State,26,@,<24> Michigan State,6,Nov 10 2018

Michigan State has a 2-12 record in lineal championship matches and has held the lineal championship 1 time from 10/27 - 11/3 last season.

I disagree about both. Miami and Nebraska have very high standards, and you could see the programs running down hill with both of them. Both inherited perfect situations and rode them for a couple of years but when the pantries ran out they were out of ideas.

Just because their successors were worse doesn't mean it wasn't a good idea to fire them. IMO, it was.

Recruiting fell off the map under Solich. 2001 was the good times going out with a bang. What you saw in 2002 and 2004 were a sign of things to come under Solich. The assistants he brought in were complacent and thought they could coast and his "I-option without the option" offense was a disaster. The fans aren't completely stupid, they saw the decay and they didn't think he had what it took to fix it. The rest was just a bunch of unforced errors, from replacing a good AD in Bill Byrne with a butcher in Steve Pederson and hiring an arrogant douche in Bill Callahan. Yes, Solich has had success by Ohio standards, but Nebraska fans expect trophies in the case and not 7-5 and a trip to the Pizza Pizza Bowl in Detroit. He still has yet to win the MAC.

Ohio State next defends the lineal championship against Wisconsin. Wisconsin was held the lineal title 3 times and has a 10-9 record in lineal championship games. The last Lineal championship reign for Wisconsin was Oct 11 2003 to Oct 18 2003 and their last reign was also their last lineal championship game played.

RE: OT: NCAA lineal champion
Ohio State retains the lineal championship with a win over Wisconsin. Next is a bye week followed by a lineal title defense at Maryland. Maryland has a 1-15 record in lineal championship games.
Maryland's single reign was on Oct 19 1957 with a win over #14 UNC as an unranked team and then lost to Tennessee the following week.
Maryland played for the lineal championship 2 times last season : Nov 3 2018 in a loss to Michigan State and then again on Nov 17 2018 in a loss to Ohio State. Ohio State defeated Michigan State in the week between these 2 Maryland games on Nov 10 2018 to begin their current lineal championship reign.

I want the TV networks to hype these games exactly like this. They say the cool thing about college football is that the entire regular season matters? This is how.

So where is this "belt" going to go next season?

If Clemson beats LSU -- Clemson's only real regular season test in 2020 is at Notre Dame on November 7, and even in that game Clemson will be favored.

If LSU beats Clemson -- LSU hosts Texas on September 12 and will likely be favored by at least a TD, and their first road test (also their first true road game) is at Florida on October 10.
