Funny that USC/UCLA have that much power. They still do today.

I just can't imagine Ohio State and Michigan pulling such a power move on the Big 10. Or Alabama and Florida pulling a power move on the SEC. There's simply too many other big power players in those conferences.

The academic, country club mentality among the Big Ten is what keeps the big players in the Big Ten from doing anything radical. There's simply no one with the geography or academics to replace the weaker athletic programs.

I can't speak so much for the SEC, maybe JR might have some insight.

If OSU/Michigan had wanted to, at any time they could have approached Penn State and their pick of the old Big East and started a superconference. Or they could have just stayed independent.

The problem with leaving the Big 10 is that nearly every partner adds a crucial piece of value that's difficult to replace. Indiana/Purdue double up in a small state, but IU is a top-5 basketball school and Purdue is crucial to delivering Chicago. Iowa's a bit small and not academically elite, but they've been consistently excellent at FB and also are important to locking up Chicago. Any way you slice it, those three are still MUCH stronger partners than the 3 Pacific Northwest schools that USC was complaining about.

Iowa and Purdue important for "delivering/locking up Chicago"? That's a new take.
