I doubt Liberty really cares much how many dollars ESPN is paying tem. Liberty has an endowment of 1.3 billion dollars. They also have some very nice athletic facilities to show off. I suspect this is about exposure . Think of them as BYU Lite.

I prefer to think of them as "Baylor Jr." actually...

I prefer to think of them as an online school more concerned with being a voice for the Christian right than education or athletics.

SMU has a 1.6 Billion endowment and we certainly care what ESPN pays us for Football and Basketball. That has to support all the other sports programs.

Yup. Liberty football isnt about making money. Its about raising the profile of Liberty. Based on how they spend and how few fans they have---Im pretty sure their athletic department is losing more money than most any G5.

Por que no los dos?

I'm not particularly interested in an openly agenda driven school joining the conference. I'm not particularly interested in my alma mater being in association with a school whose president spends most of his time regurgitating right wing propaganda.

Every time I see this thread title, for a split second I think it's talking about the Liberty Bowl.

Iiberty is just University of Pheonix hiding behind cheap religious vows. It’s despicable. I am sure Jesus would approve of the use of their endowment.
These nuts r the definition of hypocrisy.

Which ironically is a reason to consider them. I get LU is a lightning rod. It's school president is a media hound seeking face time on everything FOX. That he relishes aligning with the Trumpetts. That the school has a strong moral code that offends most as to be imposing and restrictive. And if LU had been available to my parents when I was college age and growing up in Lynchburg, it may have been the exact place they may wanted me to go. Instead I went to party school App St in the Western NC mountains.

LU is the ugly sister that every conference team cannot afford to lose to. And once LU began to wins some games, playing LU would generate greater fan interest than a Sun Belt or MAC regional team. Like it or not, the desire of the school admins is focused to succeed in the sports realm. They believe a strong sports presence will build their base and strengthen their position. The school has the funds and commitment which is a major hurdle for most all schools have except for the big boys.

Now those views don't create positive sports banter and those who disagree with their "mission" will have tons of fodder to lob bombs of online U, creationism, holy-roller U and more. They are all justified. And the upside to LU is to be the bad guy with the mask at the local 'wrestlin match. The masked mauler who ocassionally beats the white tight favorite and will build fan interest as a foe.

Whoever LU ends up aligning themselves with conference affiliation will benefit the conference. Not as your shinning white knight but as the uptight relative everyone tries to avoid at Thanksgiving dinner, but everyone speaks about.

To the conference that views LU with their upside (funds, facilities, admins pro sports), and can accept their world view, the reward will exceed their baggage. Consider LU not as a brethren, but as an antagonists, who has a clear vision to succeed in the sports arena. They you'll get really pumped to boo and implore your fan base not to lose to LU. The one game you team cannot lose to.

Liberty is regionally accredited like every other school in the AAC...the highest level of accreditation. They just happen to have a large online presence.

To me the whole Liberty TV deal is one giant nothingburger. Weren't they on ESPN3 originally even as an FCS school? And best of luck getting that Liberty/ODU game on the flagship. They are unlikely to play a meaningful enough game as an independent to get a nationally-broadcast game. And who knows when their games might end up behind the ESPN+ firewall.

I didn't mean "Baylor Jr." with any type of affection... I meant yet another Baptist school, so desperate for athletic success that they--despite not letting their art students sketch nude models--will sign coaches and athletes who will lie, cheat, beat-on, and even murder people...just for success.

Hells no to Liberty ever being invited to this conference. Don't want them, don't need them.

Must admit to being in the dark about this aspect... Has this really happened at Liberty?

If you think Liberty is the counter weight to left leaning institutions, you're wrong. Liberty is the opposite end of the spectrum from a school with a Marxist president who publically calls for the workers' uprising and an immediate abolition of private property, everything on campus being run as a student collective, and students referring to professors as "comrade". This country would **** its collective pants if that school existed, forget it enrolling over a hundred thousand people. Liberty is just treated as an obscure little sideshow.

Let's try to keep politics and religion of the sports board. There is a section for this kind of debate.
