The new additions to the team
IF any of you participated in the ODU men bb golf tournament yesterday you got to meet the new players plus talk with the returning players from last year. The only new comer that was missing was Robertson, the 7 footer from LSU. Coach Jones said he had a class yesterday afternoon so he was unavailable. I talked with Jones for a few minutes and he said Robertson had worked very hard on his conditioning and was a solid 277 pounds and that's where they want him. He said they wanted him close to the basket and may play some smaller lineups with BJ at the 4 considering the talented wing players they have.
The group I was with talked with practically all the players and Ezikpe and Coach Jefferson sat with us at lunch. Kalu seems like a great kid and make no mistake, he is one big dude. I don't think I have seen a freshman built like that at ODU since Odell Hodge. I am not trying to compare him to Odell but he has a similar body. Joe Reece sat with us a while too and he is seemed like a great kid as well. He is just as tall as Ezikpe but is leaner. But you can tell he has the body type that could add more bulk. He is probably built more like Keyon Carter was. I asked Reece what position he would play and he said the 3 or 4 spot.
Talking with Jason Wade was fun. He obviously knows the basketball history here and asked us who our favorite player was at ODU during his dads time. We all said Ronnie Wade. Lol. He said Gattison stays at their house when he is visiting Richmond and Gattison and his dad are best of friends. Coach Jefferson told us that In time Wade could play the 1,2, or 3 spot.
I asked Dave Twardzik who to look for with the newcomers. He likes them all but had some special praise for Wade. He said Wade is the type of player that just brings good solid play and understand how to play the game. He may not wow you but in the end he will do everything well. Twardzik also said they expect X Green to play well. He said he thinks his play dropped off later in the season because of his concussion he had. It seems he wasn't quite the same after that.
Godwin, Green, Carver and Kithcart and the newcome Dickens were there. They all sounded ready to play. Kithcart said it was hard sitting out a year but he feels like he learned a lot and he can't wait to get on the court. Coach Jefferson said Godwin had a great offseason and should be a very solid contributor this year. They expect to hear very soon on Dickens availability this season. He is built like Trey Porter, one long dude. He is very excited to be a Monarch and is hungry to play.
I'll finish with the seniors Stith and Caver. Jones said both have worked extremely hard all summer and that BJ has slimmed down some which they like. They both sound very excited about this year and the players around them. Jones said everyone of these players on the roster love the game and really want to play. He expects both Caver and Stith to have a big senior year. I'll sign off with that.

Awesome post. The talent is there. Look up and down the roster. I have a feeling that this group is going to be really close and that the team morale will be there throughout the year. It's going to be an interesting year. No clue what this team does, but the ceiling is really high.

Appreciate it!

I think the team will be solid either way, but if we somehow get Dickens available, it could be a special year. Based solely on size, I've always thought Kalu would get the most time right away. Wade has a lot of competition, Reece needs to put on a little bit of weight.

Dickens is raw, but having him, Kalu, Reece, BJ, and Robinson downlow would provide a lot of flexibility.

I don't want to be a nay-sayer. But we've heard all about chemistry in the recent past. We did not have chemistry down the stretch last season. One of the player's mom told me in late January/early February she felt Jones had lost the team. I saw Trey walk right past Jones numerous times on the way to the bench and never acknowledge Jones. I think it was well known by the players that Trey was leaving and Michael was very unhappy. I think it bled over. Only time will tell if this group is different. I certainly hope so.

Dickens...I hope his academics are straight and gets enrolled at ODU. Maybe the fact that he was there is a good sign. Dickens is far from raw. He is more polished than Trey Porter was at this stage of their careers. if Dickens work ethic improves he could be all conference type player.

We won't have Robinson and Dickens playing together unless Dickens gets NCAA approval to play this year which is virtually impossible considering we are not sure he is even enrolled at ODU this semester. Plus Robinson is a grad transfer and will only play this year.

I did and did you read my post. Last I heard he wasn't even enrolled at ODU which was my post. NCAA basketball eligibility is moot if he isn't even enrolled at ODU. I suspect academic compliance is an issue.

Do you think Dickens would be there if he wasn't enrolled in school or planning to be?

There is no question that he is enrolled and the coaches are very hopeful he is eligible this season. They think there is a very good chance. Will see.

He actually enrolled this summer and has been practicing with the team since that happened. *or at least that is what I was told by two different folks who should know.

Either you are a team player, or you quit for another situation. Trey and Hueitt were in it for themselves.

This ....you could see it last year with Porter.
