RE: 2018 College Football Season Thread
It's an SEC tradition. Somehow every year it's frustrating to people. The tradition being that they will play a cupcake before they play their rivalry game (UF v FSU, Bama v Auburn, UGA v GTech, USC v Clemson, UK v UofL, etc).
It doesn't make any difference when you play these teams. Consider, if you're gonna knock these teams for playing then late in the year are you also crediting then for playing tougher early season conference/ OOC games? Cuz that's all that happens. It's just a swap I'm the order of things.

Yes. Having Arkansas State and Louisiana Lafayette on your schedule (at home) speaks to strength of schedule. Granted, when Louisville was put on the schedule (at home), they were not seen as a bottom dweller.
Perhaps the strength of schedule ratings should be adjusted for home - away. (8 home games for Alabama - 4 road, all in conference.)

Not really. For one thing, most of these teams are FCS teams which other conferences have stopped playing entirely. Plus, it's pretty much a weak off near the end of the season to get over injuries. And the early season games, tend to allow the losers to shake off their (strong!SEC!) loss in the polls by the end of the season. Combine that with the fact that none of these schools are playing true away games in the OOC and the way they blatantly manipulate their bowl invites towards favorable matchups, and it all adds up. Football is the only thing that really matters to most SEC schools, and they're playing Game of Thrones while the other P5 conferences are playing hide and seek.
It really is a cultural difference between them and the B1G and PAC. Football is really all that matters to these schools. And I know that there's Vandy and a couple of the state schools have (Florida and UGA) are now respectable academically, but the conference as a whole still really puts football above all else culturally.

Only 22 teams don't play an FCS school. Most of those are B10 schools because they have a rule you can only play them when you have 4 conference home games. Only 3 schools don't schedule them all together: ND, UCLA, and USC.

RE: 2018 College Football Season Thread
So far, this final Saturday has been kind of ... disappointing.
OSU over MU (big)
Georgia over Tech (big)
Alabama leading Auburn (hope remains alive)
Some light - Vandy leading Tenn. (enjoyable, but not a big deal.)

That's really kind of sad. People should root for their own school, to my way of thinking, but all the attention is increasingly going to the big national brands, kind of like beer in the 70s and 80s.

Rutgers tied at 7 with sparty late in q2, but msu just got a break when a punt bounced off a returning team's guy's leg giving MSU the ball inside the rutgers 10.

RE: 2018 College Football Season Thread
MSU goes backwards and flubs the snap for a fg attempt leaving the kicker to improvise and throw an interception. So 7-7 at the half. Crowd at MSU is pretty bad and Dantonio looks like hell with a hangover in the dreary weather with a knit cap on.
I don't get the respect several have here for MSU. I'd love to get a matchup with them in a bowl this year. My only concern is them deciding to make a coaching change and combining enough money with Dantonio leveraging his friendship and contacts with Luke to take the job.

Wisconsin is another program that seems to get more respect than it earned. They just scored a TD and 2 pt conversion to "narrow" Minnesota's lead to 37-15 with 72 seconds left in the game.
Sparty and rutgirls still tied at 7 at end of Q3.

SMU is crapping the bed, and looking to miss a bowl game. Tulsa and ECU look to be the coaching vacancies in conference. Can't see anyone else getting canned or leaving for greener pastures.
Coach Strong's seat will be heating up. Went out losing 5 straight, and next year USF must pay the full salary. No more UT subsidy.

Really not worried about any other job but the tOSU job when it comes open.
Fick is an Ohio guy with an Ohio wife. They have a bunch of kids and want to be near extended family which means staying in Ohio. The best HC job in Ohio is tOSU. The second best HC job in Ohio is UC. I don't believe he would leave UC for MSU. He will leave UC for tOSU when Meyer retires.

Can't worry about that stuff. Nobody knows what jobs will be open or what he'd do.

Football is important to SEC schools but it's hardly the only thing that matters. Northerners have been fed a line of BS for a long time that SEC schools suck academically.
There are 10 SEC schools ranked ahead of UC. UK is tied with UC.
If we believe UC is a quality academic school we shouldn't throw stones at schools ranked ahead of UC.
Vandy
UF
UGA
Texas A&M
USC
Auburn
UT
Bama
