Is "The Big One" going back to Cali ?
A lot is going on at the Ring of Fire.
Quote:A large swath of earthquakes hit the Pacific's so-called Ring of Fire earlier this week, prompting some to wonder if it is a precursor to the oft-discussed massive earthquake, colloquially known as "the Big One."
Sixty-nine earthquakes, including 16 tremors registering 4.5 or above on the Richter scale, recently hit the area, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), which recorded the events but did not issue a warning.
Several of the quakes registered significant impacts, including one that hit 5.0 and shook the area on Tuesday morning. Fiji appeared to be the most impacted, as five tremors above a 4.5 magnitude hit the small island.

The only reason an earthquake there would bother me is that a tailgate buddy just moved to San Fran. Had to, his fiancée got a fellowship in neurology at Standford. Not something you can pass up.

If it did, it would be the most significant geological event in several thousand years.

From the comments section:
"This is all because of Global Warming and Human Activity, particularly the activities of White Cisgendered heteronormative people. We can only prevent these earthquakes and eruptions if we address the causal factors of income inequality and social justice."

Let's hope it comes after her job is done then.

Precisely. Peru suffered another earthquake yesterday alongside the RoF.

It has to be a troll. We are not that insane as a society, not yet.

Demonstrating absurdity by being absurd.
Pretty damn funny and +3 for that. You should post here more often.

It has been awhile. It is inevitable. Just hope the next one is not in a city.

If one did hit there, given the inevitability of the event, would the result be termed "Natural Selection?"

If it happens in a city, it's just over for the poor town.

TBH I was thinking something like New Sodom.

Regardless though, although many here don't like California - myself included - I hope it doesn't happen.
Ever.
Loss of life, natural resources, animal life, and such would be terrible.
The societal impact would be devastating. It would lead to a mass exodus of survivors to the rest of the country, which would happen too suddenly.
The stategic and military impact would be devastating as well.
No winners if that happens.
And I am not talking about another world series earthquake either. I am talking 10 + like what we saw in escape from la.
The infrastructure damage and destruction alone would take decades to repair.

I suppose Pelosi could turn into a pillar of salt, but I thought she had already.
Besides, the issue there isn't sex as much as it is the inability to think logically. Hence, natural selection at work. I have a mantra and I taught it to my children and grandchildren. "Stay away from stupid people. Stupid people get you killed." What's really ticking me off these days is the fact that our nation has been impinged by a groundswell of people who react emotionally to everything and think nothing through. I'm afraid the U.S. is going to someday fall victim to a stupid electorate.
And I have a suggested improvement for you. For the aesthetics you should Utube Johnny Cash's "I Fell Into a Burning Ring of Fire" in your OP.

One thing about California there are still good people there. A person can't wish for anyone's death even if that person doesn't have any common sense. As much as I dislike the stupidity of some of their leaders and some of the followers I can't wish them to die. If I wasn't a Christian it would be very easy to wish the whole state to fall into the ocean but I am and God would have been very mad and disappointed to even think that.
Let's hope it doesn't happen.

I don't think anyone who posted in this thread expressed a hope that it would happen. My first question was a serious one. Why live in an area where you know eventually that one will happen. It's not a "what if", but rather a "when?"
You could ask the same about commonly hit hurricane areas but there's ample time to evacuate for hurricanes. There's not for an earthquake. We have many such areas around the globe, like those who live at the base of Vesuvius. It will erupt again. Is it smart to choose to live your existence within the killing zone of major fault lines or volcanoes and is that not a question of natural selection?
On the East coast the cross hairs geologically are on Memphis. They sit on the New Madrid and Pre Cambrian faults with the New Madrid running North and South and having a major Earthquake in intervals of 300 years and the with the Pre Cambrian running East and West beneath the city. It's also an area where liquefaction is likely which further complicates what would be a massive destruction of rigid structures. It's quite possible that a magnitude 7 under Memphis would be as catastrophic as magnitude 9 would be to San Francisco. The liquefaction in San Francisco would be more extensive, but then there's more bedrock which allows the shock waves to travel farther from the epicenter around Memphis.
Yet here everyone acknowledges the dangers of the San Andreas but ignores the ferocity of the New Madrid. In both locations the only viable question is "When?"

One thing about a hurricane is that the destructive strength of a cat 5 hurricane is one thing that buildings and what not can be designed and built around (I.E. - to withstand).
With an Earthquake, if a 10+ were to hit, there is no building that could withstand that.
With a Cat 5 hurricane, believe it or not, there are some buildings built to withstand that.
Hell, Matthew hit (or was it Irma) in 2016 and I didn't even lose one shingle or even power. Then last year (right around this time) the other one hit and I lost half my shingles and power for 4 days.
In addition, there are provisions that can be made to a structure to mitigate hurricane damage. With an earthquake, all you really have is seismic bracing.
