As we look at this list, the schools with more than 30,000 students might be able to support an FBS football team. When schools like the Big West schools dropped football? They did not have the students enrolled at the time to support football like they do today. Some of the schools could use stadiums close by.
CSU-Domiguez Hills do hae an on campus stadium that was built for soccer. The cash to built the stadium was helped by the donations from the city and from the pro-soccer team that went there. Several schools on this list have been looking at adding football. UNF could use the pro stadium in Jacksonville.

Which schools on this list looks good to expand with? I say Wayne State Michigan to the Horizon looks like a perfect fit. They could park their football in MVFC with Youngstown State.

Which FBS league is Sam Houston State in? They have 21,000+ students now!

David I'd say the size test starts at 25,000 and also must include access to a 20,000 seat stadium.

25,000 sounds like a high bar but these schools are considering distance learners and grad students in these totals. Undergrad FTE is probably in the 16k-17k range.

There is seemingly an endless amount of large Texas schools out there. California has big schools but not the culture for FBS programs.

Okay. I updated the list. I somehow skipped the Southland schools.

Some of the schools are not 25,000 yet, but they do have access to a 20,000 seat stadium.

It would be cool if UWM, UIC, DePaul and Illinois State all had FBS football.

DavidST's list is a list of the lucky schools, the schools whose students aren't being soaked with high fees to support a football team that the school itself won't naturally support (i.e., pay for) with user fees.

Those schools are in basketball country. Basketball has always been more popular than football in Illinois/Indiana, and nowadays football is losing popularity.

But, there is a big chance that you could not make it on a basketball team.

In California...
UC & CSU systems...
The non-fb CA schools are a no go...state budget issues...football was dropped at these schools for a reason...it's not coming back anytime soon

In San Diego...
SDSU already FBS...Mountain West Conference
USD happy at FCS...Pioneer Football League (non-scholly)
UCSD going DI non-football ---> Big West Conference (2020)

Not sure. The time the California schools dropped football, many of them were under 10,000 students. Now, many of them are above that or larger.

Regardless of their actual names, Davey thinks all tech schools should be branded like research giant Arkansas Tech. Who wants to sound like some garbage school such as MIT?

David listed the school as "NY Tech D2" and I interpret that as "NYIT", seems to be a logical deduction.

About the finance statement, I did google searches for 'financial difficulties' inserting the different forms of the school name. With 'NYIT' inserted, nothing was found. With 'NY Tech' inserted, a 1.5 year-old article about The Met Museum and a 2.5 year-old article about the CUNY system is found. NYIT is private and Queens College is the only D2 school in the CUNY system. Queens College did drop Fencing and Men's Swim & Dive after the 2017-18 season.

What is the source for the enrollment numbers? David has NY Tech D2/NYIT as over 10,000 students. The 'NYIT at a Glance' page on the school site shows "Full-Time Students, Fall 2017 (all campuses): 6,334". Yes, that's only full-time students and they have 7 campuses. I doubt they get any athletic fees from students at campuses not in New York.

Old Westbury, N.Y. (main campus)
New York, N.Y.
Abu Dhabi, UAE
Beijing, China
Nanjing, China
Vancouver, Canada
Jonesboro, Ark.

Enrollment may be up but that doesn't mean the state budget issues have gone away.
