RE: Turf
So I think the reason I don't like paint over the actual color sewn into the turf is because the CAA logo is painted onto our field and I think it looks like crap. Take a look at most photos and I think our field kicks ass. At night, under the lights, it does look blah on TV. Also our purple looks blue but I don't think we can fix that.

With NO DISRESPECT to the Showker family, I have mixed feelings about the name being on the field. You can't read it unless you sit right in front of it.

agree that it was annoying that the CAA logo popped up in white paint but nothing else was addressed - not sure why this was a priority.

UWash has figured out a way to make their purple and gold look incredible on tv, would love our marketing departments to get together and talk this out - they are far enough apart geographically that there isn't much overlap in viewership. (if we can steal the "madison man" concept from Stanford, no harm in stealing the color codes from UW and changing them by one degree :)

RE: Turf
If I recall, didn't they have to update the APC side of the field a few years ago?

I've gotta think they will update the turf in the next few years. Plus it'll give them a chance to put the new logos on the field.

Hasn’t all the flooding also lead to premature fading of the turf? Has the field flooding issue been resolved with the dam renovations?

Full field was replaced in 2012 or 2013. We had a year or two of the 20 yards worth of replaced turf before it was all replaced to match. May or may not have endured some flood damage too.

RE: Turf
NFL - 18 teams play on grass, and 14 on turf.
Grass:
Kansas CIty
Charlotte
Washington
Cleveland
Florida
Pittsburgh
Green Bay
SF
Philadelphia
LA Coliseum
Baltimore
Nashville
Oakland
LA Chargers
Tampa
Chicago
Denver
Phoenix

Turf:
Dallas
Seattle
Detroit
Atlanta
New England
Indy
New Orleans
NY Giants/Jets
Houston
Buffalo
Cincinnati
Minnesota

-----
Grass is better if you have plenty of time between games to regrow it, especially as the season gets late. But colleges especially use those fields very often. It's worth noting that Frisco is on grass.

This article from last November about FedEx field describes the issues with grass pretty well: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/foot...95bfea8648

Even for professional teams with money to spend, grass does not work well late year in northern climates. Pretty sure I've seen dirt painted green at FedEx to try to cover its poor condition.

Not sure if Carolina still does this, but around Thanksgiving when there's a week off, they've sewed rye grass between the hash marks the length of the field. Little different color and texture but grows really fast in the cooler weather. Easy and inexpensive solution. Far better than painted dirt or bringing in sod that comes up, i.e 2004 Chatty.

RE: Turf
I think it's fair to say that a well-maintained grass field (it can be done) is better than turf. BUT it has to be very well maintained, and reserved for once-a-week use in the late season. That's not practical for schools, which is why so many of them use turf. And I'm fine with that. The newer field turf is still a very good surface, and it is far, far more durable than grass. (There's a reason you see it on municipal fields all over the place.)
