I was surprised.Thought one or two year at most.

What it means is that Jones is pretty safe this year. Could see him be booted the year after if he still doesn't perform though.

How large is the buyout and can ODU afford the amount?

It's hard to not extend someone with they win more than 20 games and graduate kids. With that said this is a recruiting move and the buyout should not be awful if things go south in a year or two.

Well, he had 2 years left on his old contract so it's really just two more years. From what I hear it's not a good look for recruiting purposes to leave your coach with just a year or two on his contract. His seat is no doubt getting warm but no point in sabotaging it. He's done pretty well recruiting, just hasn't brought it all together.

I haven't been to our home board yet to get the reaction but I can guess.

I haven't read what the buyout would be on the new contract. The old one was 1.5 million after the first year 1.3 after the second and 300K/year remaining thereafter. I imagine this would go down significantly after the second year as well, so imagine like Blue Trombone said he's fairly safe for this season and next but then a buyout wouldn't be hard. Just speculation though.

Well Jones is 114-58 at ODU. I don't see it as he can't win the big one, its he can't win the right ones. Jones style of play just like Tony Bennett and others went out of play even in college in the mid 80s. Defense plus the first to 50 usually doesn't get you to a conference title or winning the right games. You have to have more than one capable shooter on a team.

In his 26 years as HC he has only won 2 conference titles (both at American) and 3 division titles (one at Virginia and 2 at American).

I was at looking at his Wiki page and he has done some decent work for ODU. Blaine Taylor caught my attention. He had a good long run with ODU. Did he step down or was he let go after the one horrible season?

He was unfortunately an alcoholic and it caught up with him his last year coaching at ODU.

I think it was a good move for the right reasons and well deserved. Good times getting better for ODU basketball.

H'mm. rewarding mediocrity? Unfortunately, I know another Blue colored college program that occasionally does that for some of its coaches.

I believe in 2 years it will be $350,000.
